"I have lived here for 4 years. During and after I graduated from college. I would say its pretty cheap compared to everything around the area. It's close to the Light rail which is a nice plus. I haven’t run into a single issue all of the negative reviews are about. Management has always been timely in fixing my maintenance requests and I have had nothing but positive experiences at University Commons. This is the place to be!!!!"
"The facilities are really nice but you better come here with all your roommates picked out. I was randomly assigned one of my roommates and he turned out to be an abusive person but University Commons doesn’t care. And don’t bother having a roommate mediation if they offer it. They will tell you it acts as a lease amendment but it doesn’t do anything. My abusive roommate continues to break it and I’ve reported it several times but management won’t remove him “without his consent.” They protect abusers here. More than one time I’ve had to sneak out of my bedroom window (thankfully I live on the ground floor) to escape him."
"Lived here for one year which was plenty. Not a terrible place to live but it has substantial room for improvement. Pros: One of the less expensive options in the area Staff are good and service requests are typically quick. More soundproof than many other apartments. I rarely heard my roommates in other rooms and almost never heard the neighbors through walls The hot tub is pretty nice although for the first 3/4 of the lease it was only open when the office is open. Who wants to sit in a hot tub in the middle of the day? No one. Once they extended hours it was good. The gym is pretty decent for a small apartment gym Cons: The furniture is awful. Dresser drawers stick, cupboard doors fall off, the couch is made of thin plastic fake leather that rips when you sit on it. The dryer took several hours to dry a load. The shower floors don’t drain properly so there’s always puddles which leave iron stains and makes cleaning a pain. We had lots of plumbing issues in general. Drains leaked into cupboards under the sinks. Sometimes the shower made a very loud buzzing noise when it was on (still not sure about the reason for that one). Several faucet replacements over the course of the year The snow situation is less than ideal. They plow the parking lot snow up onto sidewalks so the whole “walk to class and everything else” motto falls through. The parking lot features some mountains they call speed bumps. These things will tear apart the bottom of even high clearance vehicles. Terrible for suspension. They seem designed to wreck cars. Drive through the lot before buying a parking pass here. Low cars will struggle hard. Parking is a bit of a nightmare. They charge 5 dollars a day for a guest pass but more often than not you’ll get there to find all the guest spots full. They say to call if the spots are full so they can tow cars that aren’t supposed to be there but when you get home at 3 am are you really gonna call, wait an hour for a tow truck to come and tow improperly parked cars? Probably not, you’re gonna park in a ramp a few blocks away and pay twice. Don’t ignore the fact that you’re going to be right off the I-94 exit. If you’re facing the highway, you can have your windows open or hear the tv but not both. Fire trucks and car horns all night and early morning. Nothing U commons can do about it but keep that in mind when you consider this place. You’ll learn to hate emails from U commons. Expect lots of threats in your email. Why management insists on being so hostile, I can’t say. Some examples of emails from U Commons: Regarding the hot tub patio… “residents are not permitted to bring more than nine guests in total. If this limit is exceeded, the police will be promptly called” Regarding returning keys upon move out… “If they are even a few minutes late you will receive a late fee.” Regarding keeping your bike on your balcony… “balconies/patios should not be used as storage areas. Objects such as bicycles and coolers must be kept in designated storage areas or bike racks located throughout the Apartment Community. Failure to comply with this policy will result in charges for improper bike storage.” It’s all just nonsense to remind you they’re here for money, not you. I can think of no reason bikes can’t be stored on a balcony. Gotta leave it down in the rain to be stripped for parts I guess."
"Luwam gave a very nice tour of a furnished 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit. Everything looks clean and new. It’s nice to have a washer and dryer in the unit. I was surprised there is a hot tub there. I appreciated the snacks offered! I like the location to the U of M-very convenient."
"Great staff. Paris specifically is so sweet and so accommodating. It was really nice living there knowing how helpful and knowledgeable they were! They were really helpful with ensuring a got my packages even when my rent was up, in addition to answering all my moving out questions, and other random things throughout my stay. Thank you!!! "
