"Me and my partner worked with Alter to find an apartment that we hoped to be our long term home in NYC. He was helpful and friendly for almost the entire process, doing his part to communicate with the management of the building we had applied for to make sure we had the necessary paperwork to be approved. This process took 10 days, and we had still never seen the apartment. Based on the photos and videos provided, we felt like this unit was absolutely perfect for us, and we couldn’t wait to jump on the opportunity. We were pressured into placing a $500 deposit to take it off market as soon as we were approved, that way we could guarantee that the space would be ours. While there is nothing abnormal about that, especially here in New York, the problem then lied in the fact that we had not been allowed to view the apartment in person at this point. After some back and forth, Alter finally scheduled us a viewing for the unit. When we met in person, he was rushing us through the viewing, and guilted me for being so adamant about seeing the apartment in person and not through a FaceTime as he had previously suggested. Once inside the unit, we both felt so disheartened. Not only was the apartment in total disrepair, but had a massive roach infestation we were never notified about. The cosmetic issues aside, a roach infestation that severe was something we could not live with and would have never gone through with applying, or putting down a deposit for had we known. I believe that Alter knew about this because it is a building wide issue, there is even a signup sheet in the hallway of the building to get your unit sprayed once a month. When we left, my partner and I quickly decided we couldn’t go through with this decision and notified Alter right away. I made it clear to him that this was not an easy decision to make, and that we were both quite heartbroken because this apartment seemed absolutely perfect for us otherwise. I made it clear to him that we appreciated his help thus far and that we would love to continue to work with him to find a new space but that we simply couldn’t commit to this unit we had spent the last 2 weeks working on. Alter’s response was unprofessional and rude. His response to my well thought out message was “Wow, I spent 2 weeks getting you approved, I did not see this coming.” To which I replied giving thoughtful feedback and explaining we are not willing to live in a home infested with roaches. (The tenants informed us of this when we viewed the space, mentioning that they have to rinse off every dish before eating off of it) His response to my again, well thought out and respectful message was “the deposit is non-refundable”. (I never brought up the deposit once.) So now that we are unfortunately out $500 that we will likely never get back, it’s clear to me why this is a 3 star company. Yes they will work with you and do what they can to get you approved, and you may have a good experience with them. But at the end of the day, Alter was not looking out for us as prospective tenants, he was looking out for himself. Had we been permitted to view the unit, or given the vital information we needed before making this decision we could have all saved 2 weeks of time and stress as well as our money. If you can afford to, I would look into another Brokerage to help you find your home."
