"It was a great rate for a room. Clean and charming. We were freezing because there was no heat in each individual room. The building was built before that was an option , so it's not their fault."

"You need to remember that this hotel is an antique, so the rooms are small, bathrooms and other features retrofitted. We had a two room "cottage" so I can't speak to the rooms in the main hotel. If you are looking for a modern Ritz experience with all the emmenities and elevators, this place is not for you. Do come here if want to get the feel of Avalon in the 30s or 50s. Steps to everywhere! It was clean, nice towels, comfortable bed. The old fashioned wall heater didn't work in one room. The morning brewed coffee was excellent, but the only fare for breakfast were granola bars or pouch of instant oatmeal. Bring your own water!!"

"Just for clarification, the room rating is exactly what the room rating qualifies for. That is not to indicate that it's a bad rating. It is to grade it for what it is. Now I must say that I contacted the Hotel Catalina before arriving because I wanted specs on distance from our boat landing. And as I was google mapping, of course, I started looking at reviews for the Hotel. And yes, my caution flags went up. I immediately paused and looked to see if ANY other places had availability. Well, the island was booked. So it meant that I had to prep for a questionable stay. Upon reaching the Hotel "Catalina," I took a deep breath and entered. We were greeted and confirmed our check-in time was able to leave our baggage in the lobby and went to grab something to eat. Once we checked in, it's true the room is small compared to other Hotels we've stayed in. Every bad review that had specific complaints I looked for. We had one small discrepancy, and as soon as we brought it to the front desk attention, Norma and Omar made sure our small concern was handled properly, Thank you, Norma and Omar! I am not opposed to staying here again, I actually think it's Kool being able to stay in a place 120 years old. With that understanding, I am able to adjust my expectations accordingly. Thank you Hotel "Catalina" our party overall experience was satisfying, no complaints. I will end on this note when you get to the Hotel make sure you take 15 minutes and utilize the MASSAGE CHAIR!!!"

"The Hotel Catalina is a quaint hotel in what was at one time a Victorian home. None of the rooms are particularly large...and certainly not modern. In fact if your room is on the upper floors, you walk upstairs (no elevator here). Many rooms have a partial view of the water or the mountain...if not, there is a large balcony on the end of each of the upper floors with plenty of wicker seats and tables. Downstairs in the lobby a continental breakfast is offered in the mornings (coffee and pastries). Amenities are minimal: WiFi, a mini fridge and a TV are pretty much it. But it works. It's generally quiet and the simplicity makes it somewhat romantic and pleasant. The service from reception is pleasant...the service from the company that owns the hotel is non-existent and a waste of one's time. The hotel has apparently been acquired by the Omeo Hotel Group in the last couple of years. My advice is that if you ever need assistance with anything around your stay you don't waste your time with their customer service (email or phone) since they don't seem to respond to either from my experience. Instead, directly call the hotel desk. I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years, but I nearly cancelled my most recent booking out of frustration with the ignored email and phone calls that went unanswered during business hours."

"BED BUGS AND HORRIBLE STAFF. Possibly the most unprofessional hotel experience I have ever had. Hotel condition and amenities are either old, dirty, or not functioning. There are a plethora of hotels at a similar price point that offer a much better place to stay. Spent the night here with my family with the intent to stay another, and woke up covered in bed bug bites. We contacted the front desk. We were greeted by the hotel manager Charlie knocking at our room door, asking for proof of bed bugs. After showing him the bug bite marks on our shoulders, legs, arms, and hands, his demeanor completely changed. He raised his voice and told us we had to vacate the room so they could “fumigate” it. To which we were at first receptive to as we were sure it was standard procedure to relocate guests to a different room in the case of bed bugs or other infestations. However to our surprise he clarified that he was not getting us another room and that we needed to find another hotel. Rather taken aback we requested an answer as to why this was his first and seemingly only solution to the issue. He said that due to “legal reasons” we needed to “vacate the premises”. To which I being in the hospitality industry requested to know what legal reason allows hotels to kick guests out of hotels after they report something wrong with their room. To which he responded verbatim “It’s hospitality laws, I know them, you don’t, get out so we can prepare your room for the next guest.” I was blown away. We even asked if they had any recommendations of other hotels to go to, he responded with “I don’t know, the hotels around here are booked up by now. you still need to leave, good luck.” then walked away. Never have seen a hotel staff member supposedly in charge act in such a rash and immature way. I do wonder if he has heard this complaint before and has done this to other customers. Truly unacceptable for an employee. Not to mention the fact that the hotel had bed bugs leads me to believe the whole place is in desperate need of cleaning. We booked a room at the Hermosa down the street and had a significantly better experience. If you want to bring yourself or your family to a nice stay, stay FAR AWAY from this hotel."
