The outermost ridge has a diameter of nearly three-quarters of a mile. It is believed that these ridges served as foundations for dwellings, although little evidence of structures has been found. The landscape preparation and earthworks construction at Poverty Point required moving an estimated 53 million cubic feet of soil, showcasing a great communal engineering feat.
