About the Business
Port Hudson State Historic Site, located at 236 U.S. 61 in Jackson, Louisiana, is a park and tourist attraction with a rich history dating back to the Civil War. When New Orleans fell to Federal troops in 1862, Confederate control of the Mississippi was in jeopardy. The Confederate army fortified the river bluffs at Port Hudson, which became the site of intense battles during the siege of 1863.
Today, the site is a National Historic Landmark and hosts living history events, including the annual Battle of Port Hudson re-enactment. Visitors can explore the battlefield, watch demonstrations of Civil War weapons, and learn about the role of African-American troops in the conflict.
The site offers free rental of all-terrain chairs for visitors with mobility needs, which must be reserved in advance. Additionally, birdwatchers can enjoy over 100 birding areas throughout Louisiana with the help of the Birder's Guide to Louisiana, produced in partnership with the American Birding Association.
Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a unique experience, Port Hudson State Historic Site offers something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
Reviews
"Great place to learn history and to walk around. They have some beautiful places to picnic at. We enjoyed our trip there."
"Nature lovers are sure to enjoy this place. Just make sure to bring your own food and drinks as they don’t offer any at all. Some trails might be too steep for some folks to walk. Restrooms only available at the museum, not on trails."
"The Port Hudson State Historic Site is a huge and very interesting battle site including earthworks, several trails, observation towers and a museum. The battle of Port Hudson began with a Federal Naval Bombardment expecting a quick victory. This was a disastrous failure and turned into the longest siege in US history. With 35,000 Federal troops against 7,500 Confederate defenders the site was eventually taken, ending the siege. The museum is interesting with many artifacts retrieved from the site."
"I’ve ridden past the sign for this place for decades without stopping. Today the wife and I stopped and visited the museum and battlefield. The place is neat and well taken care of. A small museum has exhibits that explain the siege and battles along with an overview of the Union’s strategy to defeat the Confederacy. Cannons, guns, and all manner of equipment was found, cleaned up, and put on display. Lots of picnic areas and a few towers one can climb to get more of a Birds Eye’s view of the area. The staff was nice and knowledgeable. Several walking trails that I am too old and fat to go down. All and all a nice side stop on the way down to Baton Rouge."
