"The house is beautiful. The room was immaculate. But from our viewpoint, they have a few operational issues. 1. We stayed in two other B and B's as we went across country. We did not notice any security cameras in the common areas. This B&B has them in both the upstairs and downstairs lobby. They also have limited decor accessories in the house. We assumed this was to avoid theft. It felt unwelcoming. 2. I asked for some juice for breakfast. They serve coffee and tea but no juices because juices are 'detrimental to one's health'. This is certainly their prerogative but I like juice for breakfast so not so good from my perspective. Their Keurig coffee machine was broken in the dining room so each time my husband wanted coffee, they made a latte in the kitchen. 3. We stayed in a room that had an air conditioner that was very noisy and blew on the bed. 4. Two of the three soap/conditioner dispensers in the shower were low and would not work. We subbed with the hand soap on the sink. We recognize that owning an establishment like this takes significant personal time, energy, and investment. These concerns are minor issues but detracted from the overall experience. The responses that the owners have provided to other critiques are making us think twice about returning."
"Really didn't like how there were cameras through out the house, and then the breakfast was not what it should have been. Per request changed per owner for calling my husband , and chewing him out on my post and poor customer service because when checking in we were told we were interrupt his lunch. But everything else was great."
"So here's the thing: this is an absolutely gorgeous B&B. No expense has been spared in the renovation of this historic house and the rooms and spaces are, without qualification, stunning. If this review was purely based on appearance and comfort, it would be five stars. The owner cares so much about the property and making your stay an awesome experience. And I think for the right guest, that will be the case! However, it would help if Martha's had a different approach to customer service. Right now, I believe the strategy and focus is to provide the highest quality environment & amenities, with the expectation that that will naturally lead to customer satisfaction. However, a smooth, welcoming customer experience process is also paramount. In my case, I booked one room, the Dorothy, over the phone after discussing options available. I received an email confirmation for just that one room. When I went to check in a week later, there were two reservations under my name. After a tense exchange where the owner expressed his reluctance to lose a night of revenue, he did eventually remove the charges for the second room we didn't need and hadn't booked. It was a high-stress road to get to that point, however, as a traveler on a student budget that didn't accommodate for twice the anticipated price. The Dorothy room was designed in a totally gorgeous and immaculately-restored retro style, comfortable, and perfectly furnished. Every detail was special, down to the doors, lightswitches, you name it! Such a unique and comfy room, and very quiet. The breakfast spread was visually stunning (seriously, fit for a king, it was the most luxurious table setting I've ever seen) and delicious (and I hope the owner can convince the mayor/city council to approve hot breakfast in B&B's, because he's already doing a first-rate job with only continental options). The only downside was that only one staff had been set aside to set the table and bring the food out, which meant breakfast was served about half an hour later than originally announced. Totally fine for the other folks staying there longer, but put me back on the road later than expected. Tips for success staying here: *I would recommend booking online so you have more control over your room selection/s, rather than booking by phone. *There is an emphasis in conversations with Martha's personnel on providing a high-end experience. As someone wearing Target flip-flops, I felt out of place. If you are a closer fit to the profile Martha's is meant for, this may be an excellent stay for you. If you're a budget traveler, this probably isn't the best fit. *If you are on a tighter travel schedule, this may not be the best option. If you plan to stay here for a few days at a relaxed pace, this spot would probably be a divine haven! I have the highest hopes for Martha's. The staff and owner clearly care and invest so much in making this a unique house and quality experience. I think the current issue is that the owner & staff are just being pulled in too many directions at once to provide the full service they want to right now. Once they are further established, I'm sure they will excel even more."
"Beautiful property, comfortable beds. Beautiful neighborhood. Felt more like an Airbnb than a bed and breakfast. Breakfast is minimal and cold due to some strange city ordinance. We were asked when we wanted breakfast, then told we had no say because there were other guests. They probably just need to polish and re-word their welcome speech. Did not really get a proper introduction on where to park, if there was wifi, if we had dietary restrictions etc. Owner is very hesitant about allowing children even though our reservation months in advance specified ages of children. Each day there was a new printed out sign taped to the door about one thing or another which was a little odd. We stayed in the Martha suite and sunroom. The first morning we realized one of the bedroom doors to the main hallway was not locked. The toilet was intermittently running and there was no attempt to fix it upon notifying staff. Our one other request for more trash bags was also not met. It would also be nice to have access to the kitchen/fridge as some b&b are more open but they seemed hesitant. If you are self sufficient this place would be nice but if you appreciate a higher level of service they did not seem super available during our August stay."
"Highly recommend it! The staff and facilities were amazing. We stayed four nights and enjoyed the comfortable bed, towels, continental breakfast with great coffee, and the location was perfect for us. It was very quiet as well. The house is impressive with excellent period furnishings. The front porch was so relaxing to sit on and read with coffee in the AM. It's NOT a chain hotel - it is a beautiful home that is very inviting and fun to live in, if only for a few days at a time."
