"I didn’t want to like this building, but I did. The management team + maintenance really do bend over backwards to resolve issues. The residents sway towards a younger crowd, but everyone is respectful and very, very friendly. Lots of dogs+ enclosed park. Easy to walk around to the other SA attractions. Parking sometimes slightly inconvenient, but for city living it’s kinda expected. The leases are flexible and most reasonably priced for the area. Honestly there are too many pros to list under one review.. but cons include difficult food delivery system (the drivers get lost always), thinner wall structure, occasionally missing packages due to no 24/7 front desk. Oh - also kinda hard to move large items into certain parts of the building. Overall, I would live here again!"
"I lived in Symbol this past year and after being a Richmond resident for 9 years I would say this was the most positive tenant experience yet. Apartments themselves are very sleek and clean and the surrounding area being in the back-end of Scott’s Addition made for a pretty calm & quiet environment - I rarely ever heard my neighbors and the majority of activity outside is mainly just friendly dog-walkers. Those who I got to know at the front desk (Gina, Jordan, and Nicole) were always super engaging and inviting & the few times I had any issues or maintenance questions they were taken care of pretty quickly. (They were also constantly available which was a huge plus for me because so many of my previous apartments had just completely vacant front desk service the majority of the time.) Would also definitely recommend taking advantage of their parking passes - by far the largest & most easily accessible lot I’ve ever had come connected to a property. Oh and the vending machines - obsessed with their vending machines. Overall very positive experience."
"I stayed in Symbol for about a month on a short-term lease fresh upon moving to Richmond. No complaints and only positives during my month in my temporary unit (3rd floor 1 bedroom). Great experience with staff (Gina and Nicole were awesome!!). I found they were easier to contact than any of the other similar style apartment staff in Scott's Addition that I toured. The apartment itself was great. It felt brand new, appliances all worked perfect, and the walk-in closet was massive. My only negative to the complex would be the location, which is tucked away in the back of Scott's. On the upside, that makes it really quiet - which was nice. If I was staying in SA, I'd definitely recommend Symbol."
"Top notch property management/staff @ Symbol! I can’t even properly put into words my sincerest gratitude for all of the help & assistance which they have provided me. There were several issues after I moved in here from Hawaii in 2021. But once Jordan Smith (Property Manger) & Gina Canderelli (Asst. Property Manager) came aboard everything changed! Any issue I had, they resolved immediately & if it was out of their control they explained why & what they could do to assist! And Calvin Simms the maintenance supervisor is beyond amazing, always has a smile on his face & ready to help/fix any issue! All of these people were always extremely polite & courteous… true professionals! They became like family to me… which speaks volumes considering I literally didn’t know a soul in RVA before I moved here. Symbol is more than an apartment complex … it’s a true community which I’m proud to have been so welcomed into & will truly miss seeing all of these wonderful people everyday. Thanks Jordan, Gina, Calvin & Kaiyla for all of your support & keep up the good work!!!"
"Since turnover of the old staff, Symbol Scott's Addition has really gone down hill. The new property management staff is one of the worst I have ever experienced in my years of renting. It’s really a shame because the neighbors have created such a great community amongst themselves and even the slightest bit of competence from the office staff would make it a great place to live (just as it was before the new staff). One redeeming quality the community has is its maintenance staff, especially Calvin, he really does a great job trying to hold everything together around here. The negligence and general lack of care for the residents and community continues to shock me every day. Not once has Symbol ever been proactive in monitoring what is happening in the community and needs to be addressed. Due to how oblivious they are to the state of the community, the residents collectively have to continuously ask for issues to be taken care of although this constantly results in little to no action from the property staff. In the past year of living here we have dealt with a variety of issues with little to no action taken: • Green Pool – took multiple weeks to fix in the middle of summer; was unsafe to swim in • Dog park – after multiple complaints still has never been professionally cleaned and is not maintained on a regular basis; locks broken and dogs escaping • Clubhouse not maintained – since I’ve lived here I don’t think there has ever been any printer ink, coffee machine hardly works or has coffee • Key fob access – doors broken (cant get in or remains unlocked to anyone) • Non residents – no monitored access to pool, dog park, clubhouse; non residents abusing the space and ruining it for residents • Trash service – the biggest waste of $25 a month; I’m lucky if my trash gets picked up twice a week (despite me putting it out every night when it is supposed to be picked up); we have been through multiple trash services all who have been terrible; the most recent service has been throwing trash in the resident trash rooms and has packed them full of trash without management even knowing Despite these being legitimate issues that probably should be addressed the most serious of all is general safety of the community. Over the past few weeks we’ve been experiencing large amounts of theft/dangerous activity with no action from management. The list includes: • Stolen packages – a large amount of residents have seen opened packages in the package room, experienced stolen items, or have seen suspicious activity by non residents in the package rooms • Stolen bikes – if you walk by the bike rack there is multiple bikes with slashed tires, also a handful of bikes that were clearly stolen and locks cut in half (when talking to residents that have experienced a stolen bike first hand, symbol was no help – security cameras are useless) • Suspicious activity – residents have recently felt the need to call police late at night to address suspicious people trying to break into residents homes, common areas, etc • Car vandalism and stolen items – multiple cars have had windows smashed and items stolen I wanted to give Symbol a fair chance to know these issues were going on and address them in a timely manner so I raised my concern to the property staff. On one occurrence when speaking to the new assistant property manager Gina I let her know of the safety concerns above and her response was “that’s the risk you take living here”. So in summary if you are looking for a place to live and care about upkeep of the community and general safety you should probably look elsewhere."
