"After almost 2 years of trying 5 different anti-epileptics that did not control his seizures my husband's neurologist referred him to the neurology team at Tampa General. We researched Dr Benbadis and found that he has been published in many medical journals. Tampa General Hospital's Neurology Dept (as well as a free others) scored in the TOP 10% of hospitals in the nation. Dr Benbadis and the panel of epilepsy doctors have treated us with compassion and respect. We really felt like they listened to us and after a thorough surgical workup they gave us a couple of surgical options. It has been a long road of tests and hospital stays. "An extremely disappointing first encounter. Waited 4 months for an appointment after being referred by general neurologist, to have the appointment last maybe 5 minutes, be given 4 different medication options and told to choose one. Then a follow-up appt was made in 6 months. Was referred to discuss other options as it was determined the type of epilepsy is medication resistant. I guess they missed that part (and the rest of) of the referral notes."

"Got [un]lucky enough to get Dr. Benbadis as neurologist when someone else cancelled their appointment. Was first seen by his fellow who seemed more thorough and considerate. Dr. Benbadis himself immediately wrote off my seizures with Topamax (only warning of weight loss as side effect), then never heard from again. Tried calling his office repeatedly for a week to get a hold of Dr.Benbadis for bad reactions to the medication to no avail. Imagine having 2 different assistants tell you that it's their protocol to tell you to call 911 if you have these side effects (troubled breathing, chest pains, anxiety, depression, mental fog), but not to stop the meds because a doctor needs to make that call. The same doc who more than 2 weeks later hasn't called back despite being assured my messages were marked urgent/important. I'm sure Dr. Benbadis must have some redeeming qualities, I have yet to see them. If you're willing to be written off with a prescription and never figure out why you get seizures or what your triggers are- Dr. Benbadis is the neurologist for you. Don't expect any callbacks, especially if he's at a conference."

"When my daughters neurologist retired we went through several local neurologists trying to find one who would spend enough time and listen to treat my daughters epilepsy effectively. None of them seemed to care for anything more than how much they could charge to say hello and please pay at the front desk. Dr Benbadis and his staff are very thorough, they explain everything very well and don't make you feel like an idiot if you have questions. They also return phone calls and emails!
