"I brought my 1980 TR8 to this shop to fix 2 issues since the car had not been on the road for 10 years: (1) Fix the carb since it was leaking, the auto choke was not working, and idle was not steady (2) I wanted the A/C working even in the 105F Texas heat! To summarize, the shop replaced the carb with a more modern unit to fix the auto choke and idle issue. The A/C unit was completely overhauled and converted from R12 to R134. The radiator was replaced with an aluminum 3 row unit to keep the car cool in the Texas heat, along with additional modern fans set up. The bottom line is that the TR8 can now be driven in 105F heat and A/C on with no issue. I was even stuck in traffic on 183N in 105F weather and car never overheated. The needle was at the top range of the "green" zone and stayed there. What they quoted was what I paid, no surprises. These folks take pride in their work so I would use them again."
"Been taking my Spitfire here since May of 2022 and they’ve done great work on lil Spitty to get him in much better shape—including some pretty tricky jobs. Their prices are fair and their communication is great. They specialize in British classics as well so I feel very comfortable and confident in them. Everyone I’ve met there is great. Gogi, Derrick, and Mickey are all awesome and really seem to love what they do. It’s almost time to bring Spitty out of summer hibernation so I’ll definitely be bringing him back here before I take him on the road during the fall and winter."
"Steel recently (April and May, 2023) did some extensive work on my 1958 Nash Metropolitan. I took the car in for some basic alternator and electrical repair, and a general analysis. The repairs morphed into quite a bit more work that was unknown to me and sorely needed. Derek and Gogi did a great job of explaining what was found, and why the repairs were needed, and I'm glad I went ahead and had them make these repairs. The car runs much better now, and I have more confidence in the operation of the car overall. They were very thorough in everything they did. It took a bit longer and cost a bit more than I originally planned for, but that's ok as the work would have been needed in the not-too-distant future and could have ended up as much more serious issues that would have cost more. I highly recommend this business and will be taking this car back to them in the future."
"I have owned classic cars for 26 years and over the years I have dealt with a lot of shops in two different states. Steel Automotive is by far the best shop I have ever used for several reasons. Drop Off: When I first dropped my car off, they sat down with me to discuss my concerns. They listened and documented everything and really focused on my business and why I was there. Communication: During the diagnosis of the car, they kept me up to date as to their findings as well as what they felt the issues were. We clearly discussed next steps and pricing before any work was completed. Pricing: I was pleasantly surprised at how affordable the total cost came out to . I am kicking myself for not having them fix more at the time! Invoice: I received one of the most detailed invoices any shop ever provided me with. I know in detail exactly what was done to my car and I was also provided tips and pointers for future maintenance. The crew at Steel Automotive are a class act group that treated me and my 50's car with the utmost respect and care. No other auto shop in Austin came close to getting my car where it is today and I am grateful to have discovered their business!"
"Awesome guys, awesome shop, awesome work. Can't say enough good things about these guys. I bought a 1973 Corvette that was in rough shape. The brakes were dead, engine ran rough and was slow, a lot of original engine parts that were worn out and needed replacement. Just didn't drive and feel the way a classic like it should. Did a lot of research to find a shop that I could have total confidence in their work, could trust their estimates and pricing to be accurate and fair, and could work in a timely manner. After looking into several different shops, I came across Steel Auto and I'm so glad I did. Derrick, Gogi, Mickey and the rest of the gang are amazing. My car spent a couple of weeks at their shop for essentially a total renovation. Had the total break system replaced, new tires with alignment, new distributor, carb cleaning and tuning, had them replace both door locks, had them strip all the weather stripping and replace with new ones (especially for the t-tops since C3 Corvettes are known for leaking), among a lot of other things. Felt like they took their time to do things the right way. One of the brake rotors did not look perfect out of the box. They let me know, sent it back to the factory and got a replacement one. I think a lot of shops would have just put the other one on to get the car out of their shop and I probably would have never even noticed. Their estimates are extremely accurate. No surprises at checkout time which was refreshing (a few things actually came in under their estimate!). They gave me options about brands for different parts and where it was going to be worth spending a little more and where there wouldn't be much of a difference so I could save some money. Are they the cheapest shop you're going to find in Austin? Probably not. But is it worth the peace of mind to know that you're getting guys who know what they're doing and are transparent about everything? To me, 100%. My brother is jealous of my ride now, and is looking to get a 1970 Mustang Fastback for himself. I already told him the shop to take it to to get all the upgrades and work it will need. Steel Auto ftw!"
