"Booked a room in October to stay at this hotel during my 2 young daughter's dance convention at the end of February (this weekend). Within the 24 hour arrival, we checked in to the room on our app and then later received a notice that our room has been canceled and we are being moved to another hotel due to the construction at the hotel. Within 24 hours of arrival we have been notified of a move with nothing more than they won't charge us more money for the move and offered free parking since now we have to drive and park on site versus staying on site. Since it's within 24 hours of our stay we have no time to review other options to see if we would have preferred to stay at another location closer to the event or another hotel for any other reason, the just moved us with no notice and no time to adjust our plans. I have left voice mails for the GM and the Assistant GM who are both off site at the same time so I cannot even speak to anyone. Disappoint on behalf of the hotel and the dance convention as for the girls, it's more than the convenience for us parents, it's about being with their team and the experience of the weekend away with their team in between the dancing as well."
"So close to so many cool Detroit spots. Go for an overnight or a long weekend. Spacious, comfortable rooms. Great staff. We will definitely stay again!"
"I had no problem looking past all of the construction, the hotel clearly is in desperate need of an upgrade. However, at check in the male and female employees were inappropriate, speaking about things you shouldn't at work. We got a two queen bed room and ended up paying way more than the price it said on the website. They put us on one of the upper floors and it was so hot. My friend booked this room because we were going to the Madonna concert the day we checked in and we were told that the hotel connected to tower center which had a "safe" walkway to the concert venue. The tower center was not safe at all and when we were walking back we found out that they actually close and lock the doors that connect to the hotel so we had to go all the way back and then walk outside and around downtown to come back and find the outside entrance to the hotel. Additionally, the restaurant is a joke, we paid extra for a breakfast we didn't even eat. Also, we did not have clean sheets! There were hairs under the top cover on the bed. Now with all that being said I can see how the experience we had up until this point is not the hotels fault. However, the hotel failed to keep guests updated and secure after a serious incident occurred in the middle of the night that threatened our safety. This is why they are receiving a one star review. At a little before 2:15 am my friend and I were woken up to a man screaming at the top of his lungs saying he was dying and was screaming profane language. He then said he was going to harm the people in his hotel room and then started banging on doors. This man was in the hallway next to the hallway our room was in. However, he was being so loud that we could hear him as if he were right outside of our door, even though he was probably 15-20 rooms away from ours. We could hear him slamming doors and banging on the walls and room doors. It scared us so bad my friend started crying. This went on for about two hours. We tried to call the front desk but the phone would just beep. We heard a police officer come up to the floor and try to reason with the screaming man. However, at no point did hotel staff or security (I don't even think that the hotel has security) come up to the floor or try and contain the situation for the hours that it went on. When we asked the front desk about it the next day they acted like they did not know there was a safety issue/disturbance the night before. I did not fall asleep until almost five in the morning. I will NEVER ever ever stay at a Marriott again, not only did the staff not intervene, they wouldn't even admit that it happened!"
"Room was clean, quiet and spacious. Beautiful old building, lots of potential. Still undergoing renovations, construction detracts from the experience. Security could be stronger currently one can access all of the guest floors without a key swipe on the elevator. Major competitor would be the Ritz Carlton, The Renaissance has a long way to go. Lower pricing did influence my decision."
"Stayed here New Year's Eve because this hotel is on my hotel bucket list. I knew they were having much needed renovations done, so I decided that I wouldn't let that deter me. I'm definitely coming back after the renovations are done to get the full experience because this stay had me feeling like something was missing. The rooms were spacious and it was quiet. Beds were extremely comfortable too. Outside of the feeling I was missing something, my stay was great. The parking garage is kind of scary and it was unfortunate that there's no direct entrance to the hotel is the only downfall. I will say I enjoyed walking through the halls. The looks and smells made me feel like I traveled back in time to the late 1800s. I half expected to see men with top hats and women in their petticoats."
