Reviews
"Brand new NPS site. We drove the grounds and then visited the museum. They have a lot of work to do to get there and they seem to be going in the right direction."
"Though the museum is informational, there was no one there to ask questions of, no human manning the place. I guess the NPS can't afford it as it's probably infrequently visited. SE CO certainly has its share of tragic, unjust events like internment of US citizens in concentration camps and massacring other citizens outright."
"Very interesting. We went to the Museum after we went to the actual site just outside of town. A sad part of our history."
"I learned so much. We drove around the site for more than an hour and then went to the museum. I have always had respect for what the people went through, but this experience brought it to a whole new level. Their families should be proud and hold their heads high"
"The museum has moved next door into a larger building. A small museum (now in a larger building next door to the original) with a big heart and soul. Lots of good interpretive displays and some interactive exhibits, this is the museum associated with the camp, the entrance to the camp located a couple of miles due West on the highway. As you walk in, the first thing that greets you is a pile of luggage from that time, from those who were forcedly interred here at Amache. Wander around for a sampling of life at the camp during that period. Lots of interpretive signs and displays of art, music, science, livelihoods and daily life in the camp. Thumb through photo albums, pieces of art by people forced to the camp, catalogs from that period, newspapers from the camp and so much more. A developing research library and center for those looking to dig deeper into the history and family connections. A small booth with a map and directory of the camp if you want to locate where a particular family lived at the camp. A small, cozy, welcoming library with lots of items with connections to the camp. The museum director is an absolute wealth and fountain of knowledge of all things related to the camp and the peoples associated with it."
