About the Business

Mission San Juan

Mission San Juan is a historic church and place of worship located at 9101 Graf Road in San Antonio, Texas, United States. Originally founded in 1716 in eastern Texas, the mission was transferred to its current location in 1731. The stone church, friary, and granary were completed in 1756, creating a serene rural setting that still echoes with the voices of the past.

The mission was a self-sustaining community, with Indigenous artisans producing tools and clothing, and farmers cultivating a variety of crops in irrigated fields. Mission San Juan was a regional supplier of agricultural produce along the historic trading route, El Camino de Real de los Tejas.

Visitors to Mission San Juan can explore the Yanaguana Trail, a beautiful stretch of the original San Antonio River. The trail is paved and ADA accessible, providing a peaceful oasis in the city where visitors can observe wildlife and enjoy the natural sounds of the area.

The mission is still an active community, with residents continuing to visit the grounds and appreciate the natural and spiritual elements of their neighborhood mission. The mission is located at 2202 Roosevelt Avenue in San Antonio, Texas.

"I purchased tour tickets through Viator and did a 3.5 hour tour to all 4 missions. San Juan has a lovely nature loop beyond the mission walls that were stunning and filled with gorgeous butterflies. Really enjoyed the cruise around the property."

"Beautiful place, church is still being used for ceremonies, try to be quiet and respectful. Nice grounds to walk around. Free to enter, plenty of parking."

"Enjoy this beautiful landmark. Mission San Juan Capistrano is part of the very well-kept Missions State Parks in San Antonio, Texas. Unfortunately, the church is closed because some time ago, some thieves stole the San Juan Capistrano Icon. You can see pictures in the little museum in this park. Another attraction is to walk in a pathway to the river and see the nature around this beautiful state park."

"Wanted to visit this place since it is a famous and historically significant national park. We looked at the grounds of the San Juan mission and walked a short loop trail behind it that goes along part of a tributary of the San Antonio River. The scenery was fine but with recent drought not the most beautiful greenery; path was a bit narrow so we watched for cyclists. Nice brief visit to this site."

"✝️ Quiet, Open-Ground Mission - Perfect for a Peaceful Stroll ✝️ My pictures will speak louder than my words can when discussing San Juan. It's a tranquil, vibrant, and homey Mission, with an onsite chapel. There's a house built nearby where someone actively lives, and their small courtyard and porch make for some cozy photographic keepsakes (benches, stone walls, old doors, lush potted plants, etc.). The grounds are just the right size for a stroll, with many paved pathways leading through the Mission into the woods--for those seeking a longer venture. History buffs will want to visit the burial grounds, as well as see the chapel's interior, with its thatched ceiling and soft yellow glow. It's a great choice for explorers wanting to visit a quieter locale with less traffic."
