About the Business
The San Antonio Zoo Train Depot, located at 3903 North Saint Mary's Street in San Antonio, Texas, is a historic institution that offers train rides through Brackenridge Park. The railroad was built in 1956 and was once the longest miniature railroad in the world, attracting one million passengers in its first two years of operation. Today, the train takes passengers on a scenic journey through the park, with stops at attractions like the Witte Museum and the Japanese Tea Gardens.
In 1970, the train made headlines when it was robbed at gunpoint, marking a significant event in regional history. The zoo is currently fundraising for new trains, with the first new train arriving in September 2021 and the next one scheduled for June 2022. The new trains are designed to be ADA accessible and feature improvements such as more seating space and improved sound systems.
The San Antonio Zoo Train recently welcomed the Union Pacific Mini Train to its rail line, funded by donations and featuring a sleek design reminiscent of 1950s and 1960s Streamliner engines. The zoo is planning for a third new train, which will offer riders a unique experience along the 2-mile track. The institution is grateful to Union Pacific, Valero Energy Corporation, and all donors for their support in creating new memories for visitors.
The unveiling of the new train, The C.W.T Express, in September 2021 was a momentous occasion, with entertainment and goody bags for the first riders. The train pays tribute to the history of Brackenridge Park and features a vibrant design that complements the existing San Antonio Zoo color palette. Fundraising efforts for a second new train are currently ongoing.
Visitors can also enjoy their favorite Starbucks drinks at the Starbucks located next to the train depot gift shop. Please note that the San Antonio Zoo Trains only travel through Brackenridge Park, not San Antonio Zoo. Come experience the charm and history of the San Antonio Zoo Train Depot on your next visit to the park!
Reviews
"People were very sweet even though it was so cold out. The conductor was like "Charlie is the best conductor!" and he was so funny. Omg I had the best time."
"A quick and inexpensive ride that takes you to areas outside the zoo. Would be nice if the tracks were extended to go around the zoo so the guests can see some of the attractions inside the zoo. I wouldn't mind to pay a bit more for that."
"Facility has a new locomotive running the tracks. Really enjoyed the Christmas themed displays on the carts as well."
"It's a cute little train ride and fun experience to see the park. It makes stops at the Witte museum, the Doseum, and the tea gardens before circling back to the zoo station. 4 stars because its rather loud, both the speakers and the track. it can be a bit much for sound sensitive kids, especially during the tunnel when the riders are encouraged to make more noise. Overall, was a fun experience, but just be wary for sound sensitive or easily over stimulated kids."
"This is the BEST activity, especially for kids! The depot is located in the Brackenridge parking lot, behind Starbucks. (It's very hard to miss, especially with the train whistle blowing). It's a special San Antonio tradition enjoyed by generations of families. During certain times of the year, you can get on and off the train at different stops in the park, perfect for visiting the Witte Museum or DoSeum. You'll cross over the San Antonio river, go through a little dark tunnel, and more. Very toddler and kid friendly. Afterwards, walk to Kiddie Park for more fun rides and visit the San Antonio Zoo!"
