The Dewint House, George Washington Headquarters
The Dewint House, George Washington Headquarters, located at 20 Livingston Street in Tappan, New York, is a historic institution that offers a glimpse into the past. Built in 1700, this stone and brick house was owned by Patriot Johannes DeWint during the Revolutionary War and is the oldest surviving building in Rockland County. Commander in Chief George Washington stayed in the south parlor of the house twice in 1780 and once in 1783. It was during his visit in 1780 that he signed the death warrant of British Major John Andre, who was involved in the infamous plot to surrender West Point to the enemy with Benedict Arnold. In 1783, Washington entertained British General Sir Guy Carleton at the house to negotiate the evacuation of New York City by the vanquished army.

Mary E. Bell House
