About the Business

Mary E. Bell House

Welcome to the Mary E. Bell House, a cherished landmark located at 66 Railroad Avenue, Center Moriches, New York. This historically significant site celebrates the rich ethnic history of the Smith and Bell families and their pivotal role within the African-American community of Center Moriches during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Originally built around 1872 by Selah Smith, the house provided stability and opportunity for his family, bridging generations with its enduring presence. After Selah's passing, his daughter Mary E. Bell inherited the home, where she and her husband, Ernest Bell, raised their four children. Mary was a dedicated community leader, instrumental in the survival and evolution of her church from the AME to the AMEZ denomination. In her honor, the congregation was later renamed the Bell AMEZ Church.

The Mary E. Bell House has been recognized for its historical significance, being listed on both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. Its restoration, led by the Ketcham Inn Foundation and supported by the Town of Brookhaven, has preserved its legacy for future generations. The house is not only a testament to the history it embodies but also a vibrant community hub, hosting annual Juneteenth celebrations and art shows.

We invite you to explore the Mary E. Bell House, where history is lovingly preserved and shared. Whether you’re visiting for a celebration or to learn more about its storied past, the house offers a unique glimpse into the lives and contributions of the Smith and Bell families and the broader African-American community of Center Moriches.

"Dainty little green house, build around 1850. Lacks any outside information. Seems like it’s possible to visit the inside. Deserving of a stop if you’re driving close by"
