Jack A. Markell Trail New Castle New Castle Industrial Track Trail, New Castle, DE 19720
About the Business
Welcome to the Jack A. Markell Trail in New Castle, Delaware, a scenic and historic park located at the New Castle Industrial Track Trail. Stretching 7.9 miles, this trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history, connecting the vibrant city of Wilmington with the charming New Castle Battery Park. Named after former Governor Jack A. Markell, this trail was completed in September 2018 and transformed an abandoned freight rail line into a shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path.
The trail features two tunnels—one beneath the I-295 highway and another under Route 13. Due to occasional vandalism, the lighting in these tunnels may not always be operational. We recommend approaching each tunnel with heightened awareness and suggest bringing a headlamp or bike light for extra safety.
The Jack A. Markell Trail is more than just a path; it is a journey through history. As part of Delaware Greenways' "Celebration Route," visitors can explore the route from the New Castle Courthouse to Wilmington’s Tubman-Garrett Park. This virtual experience invites you to walk, run, roll, or bike alongside the stories of eight significant Delawareans who fought for freedom. The "Honoring Delaware’s Freedom Seekers" story map enriches this experience by detailing their remarkable physical, emotional, and intellectual journeys.
Whether you choose to explore the Celebration Route in person or from the comfort of your home, this powerful story of courage and resilience deserves to be heard and celebrated. We envision a state where trails, pathways, and scenic corridors connect everyone to their destinations, empowering individuals to live healthier lives while enjoying the great outdoors.

Reviews
"There is theft going on there, but the police are hiding it"
"Beautiful trail! Great scenes and restaurants along the trail. Very scenic"
"Overall, I go back and forth between this trail and the Mike Castle trail. Mostly flat and paved, I like that it is scenic starting at the Riverfront and ending at Battery Park."
"Trail condition and scenery very nice ending at the Wilmington Waterfront where you can dine with view of Christina River"
"A nicely laid out trail. It is safely isolated from motor vehicles, with just 4 street crossings; the ones for DE-273 and Boulden Blvd. have crossing-lights to stop traffic, allowing for safe crossing by pedestrians and bicyclists. Route is largely flat except for the bridge over the Christina River and the approach to the "DuPont Environmental Education Center"."
