About the Business
Located at 211 Delaware Street in New Castle, Delaware, the New Castle Court House Museum is a historic institution that served as Delaware's first court and state capitol. Built in 1732, this museum is one of the oldest surviving courthouses in the United States and a registered National Historic Landmark. Visitors can explore the rich history of the area, including the declaration of independence from Pennsylvania and England in 1776, which led to the creation of the Delaware State. The museum also offers exhibits on the Underground Railroad, the cultural impacts of Swedish, Dutch, and English settlements, and the relationships with local Native American tribes. Guided tours are available on select days, and reservations are required for large groups. Visitors can also collect National Parks Passport stamps at the museum. Street parking is available nearby, and the first floor of the courthouse is accessible to those with mobility concerns. "Our tour guide was dressed in period garb and was very knowledgeable and interesting. Never knew New Castle was once the capital. Very cool."
"I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the court house. Such incredible history! It’s a great way to begin your adventure of First State NHP. I implore you to sit in for the tour before getting your stamp. They start every hour at the half hour. Wendy was a great guide. Stamp is located in the back near the exit."
"Since the Visitor Center was closed I stopped in here and found a tour with the guide who was in full costume and describing the history of the area around the time of the Declaration of Independence. It was very good!"
"We had a great time on the tour of the courthouse, the guide was full of great information. He taught us how courthouses were run, how it was built then burned down and rebuilt again. You can see the old foundation under the courthouse when you go inside."
"Really great museum. They provide free tours until 3 pm. Our guide (it was Thursday, April 6th) was very passionate about the court house museum and provided a lot of information. The museum is not big but has a lot of great exhibitions. Definitely recommend for everyone even for kids 5+ And don't forget to walk around - it's a great old town around the museum."
