About the Business
Welcome to Andy Mauro Nature Preserve
Nestled in the heart of Oceanside, California, the Andy Mauro Nature Preserve is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and wildlife alike. Located at the former site of a dairy farm, this 31-acre preserve is a testament to community-driven conservation efforts and a dedication to preserving our natural heritage.
Why Visit Andy Mauro Nature Preserve?
The Andy Mauro Nature Preserve, managed by the Buena Vista Audubon Society (BVAS), is a vital component of regional conservation efforts. Strategically positioned adjacent to Camp Pendleton, the preserve links four contiguous areas, enhancing habitat protection for numerous species. The land was acquired with the collaboration of the U.S. Marine Corps and support from various community donors, embodying the spirit of collective environmental stewardship.
A Haven for Wildlife
Our ongoing restoration efforts aim to rejuvenate the landscape into thriving coastal sage scrub, grasslands, and maritime succulent scrub. These habitats support the federally protected coastal California Gnatcatcher and the coastal Cactus Wren, among others. In partnership with Trestles Environmental Corporation, BVAS is committed to managing and monitoring the land to ensure its ecological health for generations to come.
Unique Features
Beyond its ecological significance, the preserve also hosts a UNAVCO GPS monitoring station, providing valuable data on the earth's movements. This intersection of nature and technology offers a unique educational opportunity for visitors interested in geodesy and environmental science.
Get Involved
Join us in our mission to protect and preserve our region's biodiversity. BVAS continues to raise funds through the Ridgway's Rail Society Fund to manage and restore these vital habitats and to support future conservation projects.
