About the Business
Welcome to Makina Cafe on Governor's Island, your gateway to a vibrant culinary journey that celebrates the rich tapestry of Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Italian flavors. Nestled on Clayton Road in Brooklyn, New York, Makina Cafe is not just a food destination but a cultural experience, born from the diverse background of founder Eden G. Egziabher. With roots in Ethiopia and Eritrean heritage, Eden brings a unique blend of traditions to the menu, where "Makina" fittingly translates to "truck" in all three cultures' languages, symbolizing the mobile nature of this delightful cafe.
As the first Eritrean-American female entrepreneur in NYC to serve "Habesha" food from a food truck, Eden takes pride in promoting unity through cuisine, celebrating the shared heritage of Ethiopia and Eritrea. At Makina Cafe, you'll find an array of tasty, healthy, and nutritious options that break the monotony of typical take-out, offering breakfast and lunch to those seeking something truly special.
Indulge in our succulent cubed chicken, marinated with berbere, onions, garlic, parsley, and spiced oil, or savor the tender cubed beef, infused with onions, garlic, fresh rosemary, jalapeño, and spiced oil. Complement your meal with a choice of three vegan vegetable dishes, ensuring a wholesome dining experience.
Operating Monday through Saturday from 11am to 10pm, Makina Cafe offers pick-up and delivery services. Due to the dynamic nature of NYC street parking and closures, our truck locations may change last minute, but you can stay updated by following us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (@makinacafe).
Looking ahead, Eden envisions expanding the Makina experience across the US and leveraging the cafe as a platform for community giving. Join us at Makina Cafe on Governor's Island and be part of a culinary movement that celebrates unity, culture, and delicious innovation.

"I was at Governor’s Island with my family on this beautiful summer day and really enjoyed the atmosphere of Makina cafe. Kayla was very friendly and nice and the food was absolutely delicious! Definitely will be coming here again!!"
"We stumbled across Makina, a food stand serving Ethiopian food, riding our bikes on Governors Island. What a delight! The food is so flavorful, lovely spices, utterly satisfying. Plus great music playing while we enjoyed this gourmet treat sitting outside on a warm summer's day. Our idea of perfection!"
"Ethiopian eats on Governor's Island! Cute cafe with outdoor seating on a grassy field under lots of shade. The kids played some connect four while we waited for our food. Really loved their beef tips wrap! Extremely flavorful tender beef pieces with a creamy spicy sauce, the lettuce added a balancing cool texture. We also shared the beef tibs and chicken rice bowls."
"I am a veteran NYC Public School Educator. In celebration of the end of the school year, my girlfriends and I decided to spend a relaxing day at Governor’s Island. We decided to have lunch and Makina’s Eritrean and Ethiopian Eatery. We received personable service, flavorful food, and listened to great music. The owner was very friendly, warm and gave enthusiastic service. And the prices are reasonable!!!!! Enjoy!!!"
