Reviews of Mauʻumae Ridge Trail (Puʻu Lanipō)
"Great hike, like the other ridge hikes to the east but longer. Took right around 4 hours of moving time, longer with a couple of stops for pictures and to enjoy the views and breeze at the top. Some area with ropes that aren’t really necessary when it’s dry, would probably be needed in the wet. Some very overgrown areas where you have to watch your footing."
"I am fairly out of shape so this trail was grueling for me, but the peaceful environment and breathtaking views made it all worth while. Wear pants because this trail will wreak havoc on your shins. And wear shoes with good traction - even when there's no mud there are near-vertical climbs that require sturdy foot placement. Do NOT attempt to cross over westward from the summit towards Mount Olympus, as there are several perilous and treacherous cliffs disguised with tall grass and no braches to grab hold of, which had my heart pounding with fear (not in a fun way). We're talking one tumble in either directiob and you WILL fall to your death. Well worth the adventure overall, just be careful! Took me five hours roundtrip."
"The first two thirds of this trail are a rolling ridge with spectacular views of Waikiki, diamond head and Pālolo Valley. The last third (or maybe it's half?) of this trail is a muddy ascent into the heavens. The summit is often beclouded, but if you go on a sunny, clear day the views of Waimanalo and Kailua are second only to the Stairway to Heaven. And this trail is legal to hike on."
"I consider this beautiful trail as moderate to hard. This is probably the longest trail we did. It took us 3 1/2 hours all the way to the top total of 7hrs. Weather was nice, not muddy. Lots of water is a must especially when sunny day."
"Beautiful views just a short walk (5-10 minutes) from the street parking available. The trails can get quite muddy and slippery after a rainfall, but it's totally worth it. The beginning of the trail is within a residential neighbourhood, please be respectful of your surroundings."
