"They're great... until you actually need something. When I attempted to get pre-authorization for a mortgage through RCU, they somehow managed to completely misrepresent my W2 Consultant job as a 1099 Contractor job, which ultimately put me in the wrong bucket for underwriting and led to a decline. Repeated back and forths, including supplying two years of W2s, weekly paystubs for 3 months, an 800+ credit score, and banking information supporting my income (through RCU, no less) and they still refused to budge. RCUs underwriters claimed their hands were tied because of Fannie and Freddie. OH. But they said I could qualify for their worst ARM loan after working at my current employer for a full-year. What an absolute joke. One week later, I applied through a larger lender and a smaller one, and was pre-approved through both in seconds. Amazing what can be done when the "mortgage loan officer" actually bothers to listen to you. Twist ending? My new loan was approved through Freddie Mac. Look, I'm not suggesting you should avoid RCU like the plague (although if you're a legitimate contract worker, they'll probably treat you like a PT gig hopper who can't get a real job) but definitely consider other credit unions first if you plan on doing anything besides basic banking with them. At least their tellers were super friendly."
