"I love gates BBQ, but at this place you must be on your toes when ordering, hope you been here before.......if not watch what others are doing and grav a tray if eating there. My fries were cold and alot of fat in my sandwich. I did visit an hour before close and did get to go, but I should have asked for lean meat on sandwich and asked for fresh fries, thinking they might have but don't know for sure, I love the location by plaza much better, and little friendlier in my opinion. But will be back to this place if in area because I love their sauce. ...and usually better than this experience..."
"Great smoked meat BBQ! You walk in and you are hit with smoked meat smell. As a person who loves to smoke meat at home, I love it! Love the flavor and the tangy sauces. Potato Salad is awesome. Ive been here before and had ribs, ham and chicken. All great choices. Onion Rings are awesome too. Be ready for huge portions. Service was good, fast and accurate. Be ready to know what you want when you get in line. Will be back again."
"First time visiting Gates. Restaurant is dated, resister lady greeted and asked what you’d like and repeated it back to the back cook who would prepare the dishes. Portion sizes are big +++, sauces have a vinegary tanginess. Meat was a bit on the salty side for my taste."
"We had a great late lunch here today. Wifey had a turkey sandwich, and I had brisket. Both excellent. I moved to Southern California 49 years ago, and remembered this as one of the great spots. My parents and I watched as it was built. So have some history with Gates. It was closed for a while for repairs earlier this year, or would have visited sooner. I believe it was built before an overhaul of the street alignment. Also before most of what became Watts Mill. Really liked the potato salad and baked bean sides. We'd dug into the food before I remembered to take photos, so excuse the presentation. Was us. Not Gates."
"Visited this establishment the other night and was really disappointed. I ordered a short end. We hadn't been to this place in quite some time and now I remember why. The service was good from the staff except for the man at the register who looked at me like I was a "snack" the entire time, which was very uncomfortable. When we got home I opened my food and the ribs were tiny. Upon tasting them they were so tough it was almost like eating leather. My husband didn't believe me so I let him try some and he agreed. Terrible quality and value for what we paid. I know Gates gets a lot of credit for being the best barbecue Kansas City has to offer. While I agree that they are an iconic restaurant chain in Kansas City they are a far cry from being the best. Our recent experience proved that. I can think of three other local barbecue restaurants off the top of my head that'll run circles around them."
