"We are visiting Newport and looked for a trail to walk our dog Nugget on. This trail was not too far from where we were staying so gave it a try. There were no trail guides at the trailhead which would have helped as there were locations marked along the trail. It still was a nice hike through the trail. Be prepared to go up and down over the trail with tree roots everywhere. There are several bridges and stairs on the trail also. They have located a lot of benches along the trail if you feel the need to stop and relax. A nice hike through a beautiful area close to town."
"A nice short hike that will take you through a Northwest Coastal Sitka Spruce Forest with old growth trees. The trail has numbers in different sections to tell you what is in the area A bench is near each number. You will need a brochure for details on each number. The trail starts past a hillside that used to be a sand dune along the Yaquina River before it changed course. You will notice the lush vegetation and thick forest as you cross a footbridge into the old growth forest. The trail becomes very uneven with tree roots to step over and some hills to climb. A number of tall Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, and Sitka Spruce trees are impressive to see with thick root balls. A second footbridge will take you through a new growth area of Western Hemlock with more open spaces. The last footbridge will take over a pond and back to the trailhead. The optional Wilder Trail will take you to Yaquina Bay and the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Located on SE 50th Street in Newport near South Beach State Park. Parking is very limited. A great experience to see towering old growth trees in a coastal forest with beach, logging, and railroad sites from the past."
"A great little hike, we thoroughly enjoyed it, and the opportunity to get out of the heat. Lots of variety of plant life to see and identify if you are intrested in that. Only complaint is that the educational sign markers don't seem to match up with the guid we found online."
"Any hike that engages my two kids is definitely worth writing about. They loved the tour guide map and finding all of the points of interest. It was fairly easy to navigate, although there are A LOT of tree roots to walk on and over. We were able to do it successfully with flip flops on, however I wish I had worn shoes. This is a great spot for a family hike or if you need to waste an hour hanging out in an amazing forest."
"A beautiful trail to take on a warm sunny day. There were a lot of mosquitoes so make sure to wear some repellent. The trail brochure was a fun way to learn more about the forest nearby. I am curious what year it was written up as some of the items seem a little outdated."
