Menil Drawing Institute 1412 West Main Street, Houston, TX 77006
About the Business
The Menil Drawing Institute, located at 1412 West Main Street in Houston, Texas, is a museum dedicated to the importance of drawing in the lives of artists and in modern and contemporary artistic culture. Established in 2008, the institute has gained international recognition for its exhibitions, scholarship, and collaborations.
In 2018, the Menil Drawing Institute inaugurated a dedicated building designed by Johnston Marklee. This unique 30,146-square-foot building features spacious courtyards and innovative design elements that modulate daylight to both illuminate and protect delicate works on paper. The institute is now home to regular drawing exhibitions, an annual monumental wall drawing commission, public programs, and study opportunities.
One of the key components of the Menil Drawing Institute is its Fellowship Program, which aims to become a leading research center on modern and contemporary drawing. The program supports scholarly research and interdisciplinary conversations on the history, theory, criticism, and practice of drawing.
For more information and application instructions for the Menil Drawing Institute Scholars Program, visit their website. Additionally, the institute offers workshops such as Inside Drawings: A Workshop on the Materiality of Unique Works on Paper, funded through Getty's Paper Project initiative. "Don't shout to kids. Be kind. We visited yesterday, and had a very disappointing experience. As my 6-year-old son approached the exhibition-(1st floor), though not too closely, a staff member (an old woman) raised her voice, saying my son not to get closer or touch the exhibits. There was no reason to shout to 6 year old kid. We have been several times "here" and other exhibitions, and we did not have any related issue before. She apologized for her loud voice immediately after shouting. However, my son was visibly shocked by her yelling and her overall attitude, causing him to freeze in fear. He neither touched nor accessed anything. Please note, when parents come to here for kids, do not make kids mentally feel shocked and fear. Also note, my son followed your rule, and has not even tried to be against your rule."
"A beautiful art campus! In addition to the main collection, make sure you also go to the Cy Twombly gallery, drawing institute, and Rothko Chapel. There is also a bookstore and cafe. I wish we were allowed to take photos because there was an extensive collection of masters of modern art. I suppose because it is free, they want you to buy the art books. The other side contains exhibitions from contemporary artists and African and indigenous art. In this day and age, there ought to be signage to address the colonialism since there is a movement to return this art to the original peoples."
"I was there to see Joseph E. Yoakum. It’s a gorgeous exhibition. No photos are allowed inside."
"A real must visit location for architects. The collection itself as well as the building architecture is very interesting"
"I loved having an opportunity to explore this new art center. The Menil is, as always a wonderful place to spend a weekend afternoon and the new drawing institute just adds to the charm. They have rotating exhibits so it’s definitely a place to come multiple times throughout the year."
