"I have a Reynauds. Not many people know what that does. It’s difficult to explain as well. But basically, it is a circulatory disorder that prevents proper blood flow to the extremities. Resulting injuries range from discolored fingertips and toes all the way to frostbite and permanent nerve damage. The permanent nerve damage in my fingers makes them very very sensitive. And it makes my nails very very thin, when I even have nails. Sometimes they fall off entirely. Finding a nail technician who understands my pain enough to be gentle with the grinding is difficult, but I have to cover my nails otherwise doing anything at all with my hands is too painful because of that nerve damage. Having acrylic nails prevents my fingertips from touching the surface of things, like my keyboard. I am an author. I could not write without fake nails. And this is where Taylor at T’s nails and spa comes in. She listened to me explain my problem and she agreed to be very gentle. And she was gentle. I understand that it’s necessary to grind the top of the nail at least a little bit so that the acrylic can stick, but she understood that this amount needed to be as little as humanly possible. (I’ll be sad when she goes away on her honeymoon, because I’m going to have to find someone else to fill in for her that month. Someone who understands that I need a gentle touch.) Also, she is so very talented. I wanted fall colors, and she allowed me to mix them together like this. This is five days after I had them done and they still look magnificent."
