Fort Foster State Historic Site
About the Business
Fort Foster State Historic Site is a fascinating park and tourist attraction located at 15402 U.S. 301 in Thonotosassa, Florida, United States. This site is a reproduction of a fort originally built in December 1836 during the Second Seminole War. The fort was used to defend the bridge crossing at the Hillsborough River and as a resupply point for soldiers in the field.
Visitors can explore the fort on guided tours and special events, as it is not open for visitation on a daily basis. Living-history demonstrations are provided by park staff and re-enactors, giving visitors a glimpse into life at Fort Foster during the 1830s. Two annual events, Fort Foster Rendezvous in January and the Candlelight Experience in December, offer unique experiences for visitors.
The Fort Foster State Historic Site is part of Hillsborough River State Park, located across U.S. 301. The site features a visitor center displaying over 100 artifacts found at the fort, providing insight into the conflict between the Seminole nation and the U.S. military. The visitor center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Please be cautious when exploring the fort, as it was not built to modern safety standards. The terrain, floors, and stairs may be hazardous. It is important to respect the historical significance of the site by not climbing, sitting, touching, or placing items on the cannons. The Florida Park Service works to preserve these special places for all to enjoy and experience Florida's heritage.

"This place is magical and they host alot of cool events throughout the year."
"Fort Foster is a Great place to visit especially during the Seminole Indian War Reenactments & the Candle Light Nights they have during the Fall."
"Great historical site. It's a small area but it's very informative. I learned that it was built on the grounds of the original fort but it is a reproduction based on the specifications available. They have only one reenactment a year. So if you wanna see that, plan in advance. Here are photos attached from said event."
"First visit to this lost relic. Very limited access to the public, chrck their calendar foe days & times. The volunteer staff and ranger had some very interesting history about the Seminole indians and US that I never knew. Make sure you take the short hike to see bridge timbers from the original bridge. Muat come back to see the reenactments in December & February."
"I've been to Hillsborough River State Park many times, and never knew this fort was part of the park. I always go down to the pool area and launch my kayak or camp in the campground. You have to go to the first parking lot foe the fort info and tram tours. Awesome fort! Get in one one of the cool reenactments if you can!"
