Smallwood Store
Located on Mamie Street in Chokoloskee, Florida, the Smallwood Store is a unique institution that serves as a museum, store, and tourist attraction. Situated on the western edge of the Everglades and surrounded by the beauty of the 10,000 Islands, Chokoloskee Island is known as one of Florida's last frontiers. The Smallwood Store tells the story of the pioneers who settled this wild and remote area, dating back to human habitation over 2,000 years ago. Established in 1906 by Ted Smallwood, the store served as a vital trading post for the early settlers, providing goods in exchange for hides, furs, and farm produce. The store remained open until 1982 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today, Ted's granddaughter has reopened the store as a museum, preserving its original goods and history for visitors to explore.
Dade Battlefield Historic State Park
