"My partner and I stayed here in May for a wedding and this was the most fun I've ever had staying in NY. The building is a cozy original brownstone so the space was incredibly unique. The hostess, Debbie, was so welcoming and kind. It felt like I was staying at a close friends house. We had the top floor room and luckily we luckily had good weather so no need for a heater or the AC. It was a surprisingly quiet room for a city and I've lived in many cities. There's so many places around for breakfast and you are very close to the subway so it's easy to navigate the city. The cherry on top was the Jazz nights, on Friday and Saturday. It's the best live Jazz I've ever heard and the musicians seem to be dear friends of Debbie, adding to the special history of the home. I'd love to stay again, it was such a unique, special and quintessentially New York experience."
"When I first met Debbie, the hostess, she promised a "true New York City living experience," and that is exactly what I got. She and Eric knew so much history about the neighborhood and treated me like a member of the family. Between that and the amazing jazz shows, when I stayed at Sankofa Aban, they made it feel like I was helping preserve this amazing history. So glad I stayed here instead of a hotel!"
"I left sankofa aban happier then when I checked in! A wonderful place to stay that is lovely to come back to after days exploring NYC. Eric and Debbie are so kind and insightful and you’ll feel lucky to be around them. I felt so safe and comfortable being young and travelling alone. On top of everything the jazz is unreal!! I recommend endlessly ❤️"
"My first visit in NY and the very best place for it! The host Debbie is the loveliest woman and she made me feel so much at home. She made me feel like I'm visiting a relative and her home was very cozy. The weekend Jazz concerts were the cherry on top, in the intimate space, I was sent to a little trip into the Bed Stuy history!"
"Sankofa Aban was an absolutely gorgeous location. An old house with history, as soon as I arrived I felt welcome and at home. When I got there I was given advice on some excellent food places nearby (Peaches was great! Thank you!) I arrived at the start of the weekday so the house and neighborhood was very calm and quiet during my stay. I stayed in the Green room which was on the highest floor right next to the bathroom. The room was spacious and beautiful! There aren't a lot of outlets (because of the age of the house) so keep that in mind if you bring a lot of stuff to plug in. I knew what I was getting into so it didn't bother me. I don't know why some people are saying this is a bad neighborhood, it was beautiful and quiet (for a city) even at night I didn't feel unsafe walking by myself. Before I checked out I had a wonderful conversation with the owner- she is such an amazing and kind person! I wanted to stay and keep talking but I would've missed my train home. I hope that next time I can experience the Live Jazz they have on the weekends!"
