"Without a doubt, Townhomes at 49 North was the worst student/apartment living experience I have ever had. There are 3 main areas of concern: Violence, Privacy, and Management. Violence: I lived at 49 North for just under two years. During those two years, my roommates and I experienced the following: two serious drive-by shootings (see picture of car back glass shot out), a shooting that resulted in the death of our neighbor two doors from our apartment, constant police presence, apartment break-ins, vehicle break-ins, Catalytic converter theft (see pictures) street take-overs and during our last week at those apartments, I woke up to a voice yelling "Dont waste your bullets on him" at midnight. When I went downstairs, I saw 10 men sitting on my car, 5 of them with guns and talking about planning an ambush on someone in a car that had left before I got out of my room. They stayed there for 2.5 hours until a police officer finally arrived. We tried to call security, but we were hung up on. That same week, a vacant apartment was broken into twice where people partied until the cops showed up the second time it happened, the party ended with a shooting and what seemed like a hundred people running in the parking lot and streets trying to get away (see pictures of the crime scene). Privacy: The walls of the apartments are paper-thin. The staff and management will come into your apartment without 24 hours' notice for non-emergency and non-scheduled reasons, whether you let them in or not. The most egregious of these violations was during my final month of living there. I was sick on the couch when the assistant officer manager, Lexi, knocked on my door, and seconds after knocking on the door, she opened the door and came in to stick something on my roommate's door. I was hardly dressed, sick, and confused. Just as quickly as she came in, she left without explaining why she was in our apartment unannounced. The management has their priorities mixed up. Quite frankly, they would not be qualified to manage a circus. During the two years I lived there, the gate was seldom operational with at least one gate propped open 24/7. This oversight directly impacted the amount of crime in the apartment complex. My living room ceiling collapsed twice and took over a month to get fixed. The last time, they didn't even bother to paint it and left just bare plaster. They then dared to charge us for painting the living room after we had moved out (see pictures). The management office is impossible to get in contact with. They will not answer the phone, answer texts, and forget about ever getting a response through email. While the maintenance staff is generally nice, they will make repairs they are not qualified to fix. For example, our apartment almost burned down in the middle of the night because an electric relay for the A/C caught fire (see pictures). Luckily, I woke up and put it out. A week later, a maintenance tech showed up to fix it. NOT AN ELECTRICIAN OR HVAC TECH. Finally, before posting this review, I should note that to dispute charges related to moving out, the office will have you fill out bogus forms and wait until right before they send you to collections before they send you a form to contact Hilltop directly (5 days in my case). None of these are an “uncommon instance” as the owner likes to put it and you are putting your safety on the line by moving here. If you are a student or anyone who values their safety, I would not recommend living here. I was a Junior and Senior at UNCC while I lived here, my studies were greatly impacted by the anxiety induced by the high crime and neglect by management. It's cheap. There is no doubt about that, but is your safety worth it?"
"The people in the office are nice, maintenance is slow, White sky internet is complete TRASH and should probably be replaced because I have never dealt with an internet company so terrible at their job, townhomes are roomy and decently cleaned before move in. The only big issue is that terrible Internet. Can barely do my homework some nights because they can't keep there service online. Also the services are based in GEORGIA?! When I'm in Charlotte, NC. Terrible."
"Horrible management. They will not return repeated phone calls and emails. They forced our college-aged son to move six weeks after he moved in (in the middle of college semester, 5-days' notice!) because of "renovations" but also forced the four room-mates that were living together to split up into other random 4-person apartments with random unknown room-mates. Do not sign that relocation clause that they stick in with the pile of lease papers. Better, yet, never sign a lease here and save yourself some pain."
"DO NOT LIVE HERE if i could give zero stars i would. i am never one to leave a review but it just got that bad. I just finished my lease up with them and i cannot be happier. my apartment was disgusting when i moved in. it smelled like cigarettes/weed and had trash in it. along with stained carpet (we tried cleaning), used q tips in the bathroom, pubes all over my bathroom, no smoke detector, dead roaches in the drains, broken stove burners (maintenance never replaced them), my roommate didn’t have a doorknob (which they didn’t replace) and more. the gate barely worked and my neighbors got their place broken into and had stuff stolen. the management never answers the phone and will NOT call you back when you leave a message. maintenance walks in after one knock at the door and almost walked in while i was sleeping. now that i’m moved out they are charging us with things that are unnecessary or were there when we moved in (and have proof). they are renovating the whole place making the charges even more ridiculous. i will never recommend this place to anyone!"
