The Berkeley Hotel

"Room was very dated. Mattress was very old feeling and uncomfortable, could feel the springs. Furniture in room very dated. Barely any blanket on the beds, just multiple layers of sheets basically. Walls were stained very badly in room and bathroom. Toilet ran the entire time. Used to really like this place when I visited Richmond but has gone downhill quickly. Service was great and location is great."

"I am a repeat Berkeley customer. I love the hotel, the staff, and the location. So maybe it's unfair to write a review about a really unsatisfactory stay. But it was pretty bad. The photo is the view from both of our windows. I had reserved a Premium Double and our stuffy room was nowhere near 500 square feet (maybe 300 square feet??). The bathroom door wouldn't latch (a little bit of a problem when you're traveling with your sibling!) but we did figure out that if we played with the lock on the bathroom door, we could keep it closed that way. The overhead bathroom light did not turn on, so showering was a very dim--and misty--experience, since the extreme water-saving showerhead provided precious little water. Finally, my bed had a slippery plasticized surface right underneath the sheets, and the bottom sheet was not large enough to tuck in well in order to make it stay in place. My bed was like sleeping in a sleeping bag on a slippery ice pond. I am sure I will try the Berkeley again in the future--but probably not right away. It is a beautiful hotel, so hopefully things will improve."

"Had the Governor's suite. Bedroom was ok. Rooms in need of repair and upgrades. The Suite dining table was dirty and smeared. Big stains on carpet floor. Repurposed Furniture used with no purpose. Very disappointing. Very convenient to where I needed to be but would not recommend if you are looking for Luxury or at least a very nice place to stay. Receptionist was rude and had an attitude. Did not know how to interact appropriately. Needs training. Valet was very polite."

"I am so impressed by the customer service at the Berkeley Hotel. In particular, Sarah was very accommodating when I needed to switch a reservation that I had mistakenly booked for the wrong date, and helped smooth out the details after the fact. And the hotel staff was so kind on my arrival, especially Alfreda. I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel."

"The Berkeley Hotel is marvelous place to stay. The staff was warm and welcoming. The decor is reminiscent of days gone by. No, there is no in-room refrigerator, pool or gym, but if you want a unique stay in a beautiful older building located next to good coffee shops, excellent restaurants and bakeries, in a great part of town, try the Berkeley. The breakfast was fine. Many of these reviewers sound as if they should have stayed at the residence inn down the block."
