About the Business
Welcome to Hukanui Primary School, a highly successful and dynamic learning environment located in Chartwell, Hamilton. With over 800 amazing students and a passionate team of over 60 staff members, our school is a place where learning is engaging and exciting.
At Hukanui, we embrace diversity, with staff, families, and whānau coming from over 50 countries around the world. This cultural richness adds to the vibrant atmosphere and inclusive nature of our school community.
As the Principal, I am privileged to lead a capable and motivated team that places great emphasis on building strong relationships and working in partnership with our community. We prioritize student wellbeing and learning, and our dedicated staff provides remarkable support and opportunities for our students. We set high standards for achievement, particularly in literacy and numeracy, and tailor our teaching to meet the individual needs of each student. Our school consistently surpasses national norms, and we strive to help each learner achieve personal excellence.
We also focus on developing the skills, competencies, and attributes that will help our students become lifelong learners. This is reflected in our Hukanui Heroes program and our Hukanui Learner Profile. Through innovative programs, inquiry-based teaching, elective options, and a flexible curriculum, we identify and nurture the gifts and talents of all our children.
We value the partnership with our parents, whānau, and the wider community. Our engagement opportunities, successful Board and PTA, and the support of our growing Whānau Support Group demonstrate our commitment to collaboration. We regularly celebrate learning successes and share our achievements with the community and beyond.
Hukanui School has earned a reputation for innovation, success, and pedagogical leadership. Our commitment to learning outcomes is evident in our Green Gold Award-winning Enviroschool status, state-of-the-art sustainability classrooms, and dedicated environmental teacher. Our school offers a mix of flexible learning environments, modern classrooms, collaborative spaces, and specialist support rooms. We also have the expertise and facilities to support international students, English language learners, digital literacy learning, language acquisition, and children with learning challenges.
What sets Hukanui apart is our ability to provide unique learning opportunities for students to pursue their passions, interests, and abilities. We also have dedicated spaces for the arts, kapa haka, orchestra, choir, Year 2-6 electives, student leadership programs, and cultural gardens.
Our motto, "Tu Tangata," encourages our young people to stand tall, take responsibility for their futures, and be counted. This aligns with the symbolism of the mighty oak trees and acorns that surround our school and our aspirations for our learners. We firmly believe that through our nurturing and collaborative approach, we can grow future leaders who are connected, communicators, guardians, explorers, and nurturers, making a positive impact on our wider community and beyond.
As our vision states, we are a leading learning environment that maximizes people's potential. Hukanui is truly a special place, and we invite you to come and see for yourself. Visitors are always welcome, and we would be happy to arrange a time for you to explore our school.

"While this is a very very good school too much time is wasted on teaching Māori and doing karakia. More focus needs to be on the basics. But again lovely lovely school."
