About the Business

Mother & Child

Mother & Child Education Center, located at 1515 Northeast 41st Avenue in Portland, Oregon, has been providing practical help to pregnant women in the greater Portland area since 1971. Our services are free and we welcome all parents into our safe space to offer resources before, during, and after pregnancy. Our volunteer tasks include organizing donations, bundling baby clothes, diapers, and wipes, as well as upkeep and gardening tasks.

We offer a judgment-free space for expectant women, single fathers, and families facing various challenges such as lack of housing, poverty, domestic violence, refugee or immigration status, substance abuse, or trauma. Our goal is to empower clients to develop healthy parenting habits and achieve personal goals for themselves and their children.

Mother & Child Education Center is an independent nonprofit organization supported by donations, grants, and events. We are staffed by interns, volunteers, and a few paid staff members. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have remained open and have served over 2,400 families, even offering classes remotely via Zoom.

If you would like to support our mission, you can scan the QR code on our Amazon wishlist or register a Fred Meyer Card to donate. We are proud to be a 501(c)3 nonprofit, making all donations tax-deductible. Contact us at (503) 249-5801 for English or (503) 913-9360 for Spanish. Visit us in the heart of Northeast Portland in the Hollywood District.

"Terrible place that was ZERO help to a heavily expectant mother! I was referred here by the Women’s Clinic nearby, but they have been no help whatsoever. You can’t just walk in; apparently, you need to call to make an appointment. But even when you follow their protocol, they never return your phone calls. I was never able to enter, nor access, their goods and services. I will be reporting this so-called non-profit operation to the Better Business Bureau and the Portland Providence Hospital as a sham operation that prevents low-income individuals from accessing their pregnancy resources. Terrible operation with very rude customer service! Shocking!"

"Please be aware that there are no medical professionals on staff. This is a biased organization with the goal of preventing women from choosing abortion."

"Our family is so grateful for Mother and Child. We really appreciate the items they put together for us. We are spread thin financially so this just means the world to us. I look forward to paying it forward by donating back our baby's clothing as she outgrows them. Thank you for what you guys do!"

"I've been here on n off during the last 4 years when times have gotten tough. Great place for resources n also my favorite spot to donate to. Today I took in a big bag of gently used maternity clothes n asked for breastfeeding clothes in return. I also picked up a baby carrier n one of those mirrors to keep an eye on baby in the back seat. The ladies r always sweet n happy to help!"
