"From the looks of it now they have come a very long way. I haven't visited the site but it sounds interesting and I'm thankful for what it's become but it's a drastic and improved change from what it was in the 1950's. Burleson was the first school I attended and it was simply a terrifying experience for the kid that came from a Spanish speaking family. We lived in the projects, my parents were alcoholics and there were 7 of us so you can just imagine the strain it put on all of us. But my worst experience of all came in my classroom with Mrs. Ybarra. Times were much different then. As a kid going into a classroom that was given instruction in English, I felt completely left out. I didn't know what was going on. I hated school and tried my best to learn but one day during class I had to go to the bathroom so I raised my hand and kept calling out "maestra," to get her attention and other children also tried to get her to see how much I needed her but the teacher came to my desk and I told her I had to go so all she did was hit the desk and said "English! Speak English! and walked away. I couldn't help but urinate on my desk. That was the most humiliating experience of the beginning of my life. The very nice custodian came and showed more compassion than that awful woman. When my own children began school I assured them that they would never have to go through this because I made sure the teachers were aware of the restroom policy when I first met them. I must have learned English fast because she would sent me on errands across the street to a store to buy Pet milk for her infant baby. Yes, Similac wasn't available then. Keep in mind I was only 7 years old. Sixty years later is better than NEVER."
