About the Business

Douglas MacArthur Academy

Douglas MacArthur Academy is a primary school located at 4401 Valleyside Road in Cleveland, Ohio. At Douglas MacArthur, girls are encouraged to be competent, confident, and compassionate individuals. The institution has recently awarded ten teachers with the Excellence in Teaching Award for their instructional expertise, creativity, and innovation. Additionally, several CMSD schools, including Douglas MacArthur, have been recognized by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for promoting exercise, nutrition, and safety among students and staff.

Recently, CMSD scholars from various high schools gathered for the Teen Health Summit to discuss teen sexuality in an open and enlightening conversation. The opening of the Mound Wellness Center, Glenville Wellness Center, and Clara E Westropp Wellness Center is a collaborative effort between MetroHealth and CMSD to provide school-based healthcare services.

Mrs. Sekaran, a dedicated teacher with 15 years of experience, has been commended for her efforts in encouraging students to participate in AP classes. Representative Brown has formed a Youth Advisory Council to learn more about the issues that are important to young constituents, with several students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District being selected to serve on the council.

The institution also focuses on professional development for PreK and Kindergarten teachers. Recently, two students at Douglas MacArthur were crowned as logo winners for their collaborative effort in creating a new school logo. Grades 5-8 voted on the logo designs, and the VILS team tallied the results, showcasing the creativity and talent of the students at Douglas MacArthur Academy.

"As being part of the first ever graduating class of DMGLA, I have a lot to say. I started to attend when the building first opened up, I was in second grade. I remember being generally mad with my parents because attending an all-girls school was not for me. I remember a lot of bad days I had there. I was a shy and reserved girl, with little real friends, but as I got older, I learned to make some, and still to this day have some of the best memories of my life from this school. I remember i had some dark days, but thanks to my loving and caring teacher, she helped me. Truthfully, I wish I had gone to her sooner, but I didnt. I remember my teacher helping me through all she could and reaching out. I thank her so much for that. She got me through a lot. The teachers here really care about the well being of the students, on more than just a professional level, some of the teachers here cared for you deeply, on a more family level. I remember saying everyday that i went to this school how much i hated it, and its stupid dress code, and i couldnt wait to leave, but honestly, Id do anything in the world to go back. I am now a junior in high school and i really wish i wouldve enjoyed my days at this school more. If you are a student at this school and reading this, and hating this school, please dont. The teachers might seem overly annoying, but really its only because they care, i know its annoying to have that said to you, but i really miss it. Majority of my teachers now do not show any interest in anything outside of doing their class work. So take the advantages of having a caring staff to talk to. The teacher i mentioned before, still emails my dad to see how our family is, you dont get that at every school. I miss waking up every morning and just throwing on some clothes and walking to the bus, without really worrying about how my hair looked, or if my make up was okay, in a coed school, or highschool even, that is a huge deal, but my classmates would all come in like a family and not really try to hard to impress each other. Sure, we all had our differences and not all got along, but thats what family is. I highly recommend this school, for any parents that care about their daughters well being. And students who attend, please, try to enjoy it while you have it."

"This is the best school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District! The Principal, Mrs. King, is hands on. She is professional, friendly, available and a great leader! The teachers are dedicated, compassionate and make learning fun. The students are caring, responsible and respectful. This is a great school. Any girl lucky enough to attend this school is a winner! There are plenty of field trips and activities throughout the school year. They need to build a new, larger school, so more girls in the district may attend this fine school! It is an honor to have your children attend this older school with an up to date staff, parents and students! We love DMGLA!"
