Indian Mound Camp Ground in Apopka, Florida offers a unique camping experience surrounded by the natural beauty of sand pine scrub and pine flatwoods. Situated near the Rock Springs Run State Reserve, visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, and horseback riding on 17 miles of scenic trails. Primitive campsites along Rock Springs Run and the Wekiva River are accessible by canoe only, while equestrian camping facilities are also available.
Please note that access to the reserve is through Rock Springs Reserve Road and Wekiva River Road in Sorrento, Florida. The old entrance off State Road 429 South is open during hunting season for participants, as the reserve is also co-managed with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for hunting purposes. Hunting is permitted on select weekends from September through January, with designated areas clearly marked and some trails closed for safety reasons.
For more information on hunting and trail closures, please contact Wekiwa Springs State Park at 407-553-4383. Please be aware that there is no swimming or access to the Wekiva River at Rock Springs Run State Reserve. "I love stopping off while paddling up and down the run. The run gets 5 stars, but the campsite less so. It is the best site along the run. Fire ring, benches, and a bear/ critter box for food and garbage storage overnight. Cons are the campsite is mostly dirt with sweet gum seed pods all over (i.e. spiny) making it difficult to find a nice place for a tent. Also, people need to learn to burry their toilet paper as a few feet into the woods in any direction is covered in used TP."
