About the Business

Dickinson Park

Dickinson Park, located at 7455 Eden Brook Drive in Columbia, Maryland, is a historic park that offers a glimpse into the rich history of the area. The park is part of the larger Blandair Regional Park, which encompasses several different sections including North, West, and East. Visitors can explore the grounds and learn about the various tribes and families who have lived on the land throughout the centuries.

The park is currently undergoing development for its next phase, which will include outdoor basketball courts, a skate park, pickleball courts, pathways, a parking lot, and shade structures. This new phase will be adjacent to the West Parking lot, near the multi-purpose fields.

The history of the land dates back to the Susquehannock and Piscataway tribes, followed by European settlers including the Talbots, Dorsey, Howard, and Weems families. The Weems family, who owned the land in the early 19th century, farmed the land with the help of enslaved individuals until emancipation in 1864.

The property was later owned by Theodorick Bland, who named it "Blandair," and his descendants continued to live on the land until it was sold to the Gaither family in 1857. The Gaithers built the brick manor house that still stands in the park today.

Over the years, the land transitioned from a dairy farm to fruit orchards, with various families owning and operating the property. The last owners, the Smith family, resisted efforts to sell the land for development and instead preserved it as a green oasis in the growing town of Columbia.

Today, Dickinson Park offers a unique opportunity to explore the history of the area while enjoying outdoor recreation. With its diverse landscape and historical significance, the park is a valuable asset to the community of Howard County.

"The basketball courts are well used. There is a really nice baseball field. And for little kids to a little bigger, there is a play area that is quite nice. The play area is way in the back so doesn't get overly crowded."

"Just a fun walk in a neighborhood park on a sun shining day. Rec equipment for younger people. Open field for Frisby throwing etc, batting cage."

"Very nice local park with a decently challenging play structure for older children. Younger children will enjoy a structure great for the 2 to 5 range. Parents of new walkers will like the same structure when the park is more empty since there aren't too many ways down. Only negative is no real restrooms, only an out house."

"Great park. Once they get the soccer nets back up it'll be five stars."

"Nice park. There is a playground on the back of the park, a baseball and a soccer field. It is great to see any sky events such as meteor showers, eclipses, rocket launches from VA and anything else that requires a wide open space."
