Harriet Tubman Cultural Center

The Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, located at 8045 Harriet Tubman Lane in Columbia, Maryland, is a historic institution that commemorates the legacy of the Harriet Tubman High School and celebrates the impact of African Americans in Howard County and beyond. Originally opened in 1949 as the county's only all-black high school, the building was used by the Howard County Public School System for over 50 years before being transformed into a cultural center.

The center offers a variety of spaces for rental for all occasions, with prices set to increase on July 1, 2023. The Virginia Randolph & Cecil Burton Multipurpose Room is available for reservation by the hour, with a 2-hour minimum requirement.

In addition to event spaces, the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center also offers guided tours and field trips for visitors of all ages. Interested parties can submit a tour request form for more information.

During inclement weather, the center follows the operating status of Howard County schools. If schools are closed, the center will strive to open by 10:30am. For updates on the center's status, visitors can call the Information Status Line at 410-313-4452 (option 0).

"I took a tour 2 weeks ago, and found this cultural center to be so well done. The history of this building for children of color in Howard County deserves to be heard. The excellence and cultural legacy that walked through these halls deserve our respect, appreciation, and support. My family & I will go back many times so we can take our time to absorb and reflect on all of the pictures, plagues, and displays. Please bring your entire family to learn about the rich heritage of not just this building, but the entire community."

Kudos & cheers to their superb employees (staff) that were outstanding, curious, knowledgeable, informative, intriguing to successfully provide a very detailed thorough, thought provoking, surprising curious introduction perspective via well-delivered, fascinating presentation about a special, secret world that I knew/know practically nearly nothing about.. This unique, extra special Harriett Tubman Cultural Center was/is quite a beautiful, lovely, hidden gem school discovery with impressive, very detailed, factually accurate exhibits & living her/(his)story that comes into view in a wholly different way by way of very knowledgeable, interesting docent(s) like Robin who truly managed to blow-off lid on actual, truly shocking, previously unknown, alternative reality that really perfectly, uniquely reflects herstory/history in most appropriate, fitting, best way- directly from actual, original school which this H.T. Cultural Center is housed in as a living museum for local Howard County residents, visitors/guests to perfectly demonstrate 1st-hand in a courageous, meaningful, significant & impactful way a true glimpse into life for African American peeps as individuals & families throughout time. "The movement to convert this historical school at Howard County to a cultural center is brilliant and necessary. A piece of history is preserved while it offers a open space to host many events and many much needed services. I enjoy reading its history and pictures every time I visit this center. I'll give it a 5 stars."

"The Harriet Tubman Cultural Center does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For example, a person who was recently at the Harriet Tubman Center— as I had the misfortune of hearing— Was left to be stuck on a wheelchair ramp because of the failure of the center to comply with the ADA. That is, if my understanding of history is correct, not in the spirit of what Harriet Tubman herself would have wanted—as she herself became a person with disabilities while she was enslaved."
