About the Business

Knoxville National Cemetery
Welcome to the Knoxville National Cemetery, a revered site dedicated to honoring the memory and service of our nation's veterans. Located at 939 Tyson Street in the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee, this historic cemetery serves as a solemn resting place for those who have selflessly served in the armed forces.
About Us:
Established during the Civil War by Union Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside after the siege of Knoxville, our cemetery holds a place of historical significance. Capt. E.B. Chamberlain's original design was so meticulous that it set the standard for national cemeteries, leading to its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
VLM Digital Platform:
We embrace modern technology through the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM), a digital platform that preserves the memories of nearly 10 million veterans. This interactive space allows you to post tributes, share military service timelines, upload images, and more, ensuring that the stories of our veterans live on for generations to come.
Eligibility and Services:
Knoxville National Cemetery offers burial services for eligible veterans, their spouses, and dependents. We provide space for cremated remains and may accommodate casketed remains in existing family plots. Our cemetery ensures that every veteran is honored with a government-furnished grave marker, and we maintain the dignity of the site with strict policies regarding decorations and adornments.
Visiting Us:
The cemetery is located in Knoxville's northern section, easily accessible from Interstate 129 and Interstate 275. A grave locator at the main gate assists visitors in finding their loved ones' resting places. We proudly fly the United States flag daily and honor our veterans with special displays on Memorial Day.
Notable Figures:
Among the honored interred are notable figures such as Sergeant Troy A. McGill and Private Timothy Spillane, both recipients of the Medal of Honor. We also remember Brigadier General Robert Reese Neyland, a distinguished military leader and former University of Tennessee football coach.
Visitor Information:
We welcome visitors to pay their respects and learn more about the history of our veterans. For educational resources and additional information, please explore our Education section on the website. To arrange for burial services or for any inquiries, please contact our National Cemetery Scheduling Office.
Knoxville National Cemetery stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. We are committed to preserving their legacy with the utmost respect and care.

"We love you grandpa."
"One of the best small national cemeteries developed during the Civil War era, in my humble opinion, and I've seen many. My son and I found it taking a wrong turn while wife and daughter were attending University of Tennessee (Go Vols! LOL) orientation. I did not know that East Tennessee refused to join the CSA during the Civil War and fought for the GAR, as explained in the interpretive plaques. The final resting place of two CMOH recipients, Timothy Spillane (Civil War - died 1901) and Troy A. McGill (WWII - KIA 1944). For tree lovers, it contains one of the largest black maples (Acer nigrum) I have ever seen and it is in good condition!"
"Wonderful tribute to Our Nation’s Fallen."
"It is nice to see this site, designed for fallen soldiers, so well kept. The grass was mowed and I couldn't see any weeds, very respectful for those who chose to protect our country. Right after I drove in, I saw a small covering that has the list of the soldiers and where to find their grave marker."
"We stumbled upon this while visiting Knoxville, stopped and drove around. It’s well taken care of."
