Impala Fountain
Impala Fountain, also known as the Herbert C. Morris Memorial Fountain, is a stunning tourist attraction located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Initiated by Mrs. Herbert Morris and the Fairmount Park Art Association, this fountain was built in 1962-1963 to honor the memory of Herbert C. Morris, a former officer and director of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia. The fountain features twelve life-size impala antelopes leaping over ten jets of water in an oval-shaped pool. The graceful arcs of the impalas in flight capture the animals' lightness and agility, with a mother and calf grazing nearby, unaware of the alarm that caused the rest of the herd to bolt. The animals are joined together by mortise and tenon joints and brass pins, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the sculpture.
Matthias William Baldwin
The Matthias William Baldwin institution is located on Market Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It was a gift from Burnham, Williams & Company of the Baldwin Locomotive Works to the City of Philadelphia through the Fairmount Park Art Association. Matthias Baldwin, a former jewelry maker, designed the first U.S.-made steam locomotive in 1831 and his company became one of the largest makers of locomotives in the world before his death in 1866. Baldwin was also a philanthropist and civic leader, founding a school for African American children and helping launch The Franklin Institute. The bronze statue of Baldwin was originally installed at Broad and Spring Garden Streets in 1906 before being moved to City Hall plaza in 1921 and then to its current location in 1936. The institution is a part of the Museum Without Walls: AUDIO program, with voices from architectural and cultural historian George E. Thomas and Philadelphia transit historian Joel Spivak. The Association for Public Art has launched a unique historic archive online, showcasing the significance of institutions like Matthias William Baldwin.
Statue of General Casimir Pulaski
The Statue of General Casimir Pulaski, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned by the First People's Bank Trustees for Reilly Trust. This stern, sword-wielding portrait of General Pulaski, a Polish nobleman who fought alongside George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, is situated opposite the Montgomery monument in the William M. Reilly Memorial. The sculptor, Sidney Waugh, was a decorated veteran of World War II known for his architectural sculptures in Washington D.C. and friezes in Pittsburgh. General Reilly's will established a trust fund for creating monuments to Revolutionary War heroes, with the Pulaski statue being one of the first four installed in 1947. The memorial also includes statues of Montgomery, von Steuben, Lafayette, John Paul Jones, and Nathanael Greene, all honoring those who fought for the colonies' independence from British rule. The sculptures are a symbol of appreciation and gratitude to the countries that birthed these freedom-loving men.
Smith Memorial Arch
Smith Memorial Arch is a historic monument located on the Avenue of the Republic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Commissioned by the Fairmount Park Art Association, the memorial was initiated by Richard Smith, a wealthy Philadelphian who bequeathed a half million dollars for its construction. Designed by architect James H. Windrim and featuring sculptures by various artists, the memorial pays tribute to Pennsylvania's naval and military heroes of the Civil War. The memorial consists of nine busts, three figures, and two equestrians, created by renowned artists such as Charles Grafly, Alexander Stirling Calder, and Daniel Chester French. Despite facing delays and challenges during its construction, the Smith Memorial Arch was finally completed in 1912 and stands as a grand gateway to Fairmount Park.
All Wars Memorial to Colored Soldiers
