About the Impala Fountain
Impala Fountain, also known as the Herbert C. Morris Memorial Fountain, is a stunning tourist attraction located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Initiated by Mrs. Herbert Morris and the Fairmount Park Art Association, this fountain was built in 1962-1963 to honor the memory of Herbert C. Morris, a former officer and director of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia.
The fountain features twelve life-size impala antelopes leaping over ten jets of water in an oval-shaped pool. The graceful arcs of the impalas in flight capture the animals' lightness and agility, with a mother and calf grazing nearby, unaware of the alarm that caused the rest of the herd to bolt. The animals are joined together by mortise and tenon joints and brass pins, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the sculpture.
Designed by artist Henry Mitchell, who studied locally at the Tyler School of Art and the Accademia di Brera in Milan, Impala Fountain is considered the finest achievement of Mitchell's career. Known for his user-friendly animal sculptures that emphasize the joyful and gentle side of nature, Mitchell's work can also be seen at various outdoor sites around the city, including the Zoo and Drexel University.
With a black granite base pool and a serene setting designed by Hatfield, Martin and White, the bronze animals were cast by Battaglia and Company in Milan. The fountain is a testament to the beauty and artistry of Mitchell's work, showcasing the dynamic movement and grace of the impala antelopes in flight. A true masterpiece of public art in Philadelphia, Impala Fountain is a must-see attraction for visitors and locals alike.
