The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge Admin Building and Visitor Contact Station is a key institution located at 1661 West Jpg Niblo Road in Madison, Indiana, United States. The institution is generally open to visitors on Mondays, Fridays, and the second and fourth Saturday of each month, except for Federal Holidays. The refuge is currently closed to the public and will reopen for the season on April 15. Visitors are encouraged to call the refuge office at 812-273-0783 for more information. For a first visit to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, visitors are recommended to allow at least an hour to stop at the office, take a safety briefing, and obtain a daily pass. This is also a great opportunity to speak with the staff about available activities, pick up a refuge map, and learn about current wildlife sightings. The institution also offers guided tours by van throughout the public use season, with special tours available for birding, wildflower hikes, and historical tours of the property. Tours of the historic Old Timbers Lodge can also be scheduled by contacting the refuge office.
