About the Business
Welcome to Miller Field Seaplane Hangars
Nestled in the heart of Staten Island, New York, Miller Field Seaplane Hangars is a business steeped in rich history and tradition. Located at 38 Miller Fld, Staten Island, NY 10306, our facility offers a unique glimpse into a bygone era, where aviation history and American heritage converge.
Established on grounds with a storied past, Miller Field was originally named in honor of Captain James E. Miller, the first American aviator to be killed in action during World War I. Before its military significance, the land was part of the Vanderbilt family's vast estate, a name synonymous with American industrial prowess. The property was home to the "White House," a residence of George Washington Vanderbilt, famed for constructing the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina.
Completed in 1921, Miller Field was a vital Air Service Coast Defense Station, featuring seaplane ramps, hangers, and radio masts. It played a significant role in both world wars, serving various military functions and hosting notable events, such as Admiral Byrd's testing of the Ford Trimotor for his Antarctic expedition.
Throughout the 20th century, Miller Field adapted to the changing needs of national defense, from housing the New York National Guard's 102nd Observation Squadron in the 1920s to hosting Army aircraft and Green Beret training during the Cold War. Deactivated in 1969, it was the last grass runway in New York City and is now part of the National Park Service's Gateway NRA.
Today, Miller Field Seaplane Hangars stands as a testament to its vibrant history. We offer a unique venue for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike to explore the legacy of this iconic site. Whether you're visiting to learn about its past or simply enjoy the serene surroundings, Miller Field Seaplane Hangars invites you to be part of its ongoing story.

"Historic seaplane hangers built in 1919. It looks like they are building a new security fence around them."
