St. Joseph's Health Hospital Emergency Room

"My SO significant other went into the ER for complaints with her stomach. She has a condition that can cause this however the issue wasn’t because of her condition (paralytic ileus). At one point in the ER I witness her lose total control of her right arm and leg with the inability to complete sentences. She also stated she had lost vision in her right eye outside of “sparkling”. I addressed this with the Nurse as my SO continued to verbally request for help. Upon gathering a nurse for the situation who is still currently unknown as I am trying to coordinate with Patient Care. The nurse informed my SO that she was hyperventilating and having an anxiety attack. We continued to express to this nurse that there is a serious problem, my SO had been asleep and woke to drink water, she had not been breathing fast. She could not move her arm or right foot, speak or change facial expression. She could only repeat “hurry” and the nurse turned and looked at her stating “ you need to speak in sentences if you want me to help”. The nurse half heartedly attempted a stroke test with her and failed. The nurse then requested her to do it again. Assisted her with it by placing her hands where she WANTED them (for a passing test) then said she was fine and walked away. I continued to get another nurse who also was reluctant to help. He did no actions in regard to her complaints, stated to she was having an anxiety attack, intravenously injected her with something and she fell into some form of sleep state. She continued to have lack of function in her right extremities after this as well, this improved with time. After this second nurse administered the medication, he then placed her hand that she complained about on top of her face as she lied on her back and still to this day I have no idea what medical advantage that provided. It was disrespectful mockery, at best. For roughly four hours, give or take, she wasn’t treated for possible stroke symptoms. Her abdominal scan came back and finally after realization of blood clots forming and lodging into her spleen they then gave her a blood thinner. I would comfortably say that it took almost six hours for this to come into effect while her and myself were ignored and mistreated. I strongly believe that she could have died that night due to malpractice. The attending neurologist believes this was a TIA. The neurologist had to conduct another test due to finding this information from ME, not a nurse, not another doctor, not even a record on file. This nurse chose to tell a patient, my loved one, to use complete sentences or she wouldn’t help, while suffering a TIA. This is negligent medical malpractice. I have currently attempted to call Patient Care and left a message. I also went down to their office and informed them of a report, she asked me who sent me here and why I was here. She then gave me a card and stated they only take report by phone or email. In this moment at this hospital I have never felt so absolutely powerless even with the one person in the building I should come to in support of this horrific experience we had. This has been one of the most traumatizing events of our lives. I can’t express that enough. She is home and safe thanks to daily blood thinner medicine until they find out more from blood test in a week or two. I also kindly ask this hospital not to respond to this review, it will never change my mind in regards to your third world practices."

"I know that no ER is perfect and it’s especially hard when it’s overcrowded and understaffed. I get it. But yesterday I went in (not disclosing for what) but they got me right into triage, immediately got me into a room and started medication and IV fluids. I think this ER gets a bad rep and it’s honestly the only ER I ever go to. Again, no hospital is perfect but St. Joe’s always does right by me. Thank you to all staff who helped me, and help our community every day. Y’all rock."
