"Read the lease they give you carefully and try to negotiate before signing, especially their auto-renew policy and their break-lease policy. Once your year lease is up, Rent Smart will auto-renew you for another 12-months and they won’t give you the option to switch to month-to-month (in my experience). And their break lease policy can put you back thousands of dollars for leaving outside of that one month a year your lease renews. From my experience, Rent Smart sees their job as making as much money as possible for themselves and the owners and treat tenants like the enemy. I and my neighbors in the apartments next to mine called attorneys for help dealing with them at different times because we felt they were treating us in a predatory manner. Someone else in our building called Montana Fair Housing and was told they have gotten a lot of complaints about the company. The apartments I’ve seen are nice, but be prepared to advocate for yourself and don’t sign the lease without knowing what you’re getting into!! Edit: Thanks for responding, Mary. Glad we’re on the same page that I was naive for moving into your apartments without carefully reading the lease first and others should not make the same mistake, that is the only reason for my review. Wanted to clarify that you only waived my fees once I found an attorney and threatened legal action. Before then, Sarah sent me an initial bill for ~$250 and followed up saying prompt payment was needed less than 24 hours after informing me of the charge. Take care."

"I had a lovely experience renting with RentSmart! They were always quick to answer my questions and super responsive with maintenance requests. In a really crazy rental market, I found it to be a real blessing to work with a property management company filled with kind and helpful people. "We have not had the best experience with Rent Smart. We have rented our same apartment for 3 years and continually have been great renters. Have never been late on a single month. I requested several times to move our lease date, awhile in advance, up by 1 week (which they have done for our neighbor) and they will not due to not having enough "accommodations". I understand that we signed a lease until a certain date, but I feel like they are not trying to work with us whatsoever even though we have been with them for an extended period of time."
