Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park CO
About the Business
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, located in Colorado, United States, is a breathtaking park and tourist attraction that showcases some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. The park offers visitors the opportunity to experience a vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky that has been sculpted by the Gunnison River over two million years.
Visitors can explore the geologic history of the canyon, which tells a story of uplift, volcanism, and the erosive power of water. Activities such as hiking, kayaking, and climbing require a free permit for inner canyon use.
For those interested in stargazing, the park hosts a dark skies event from September 14-16 along the Gunnison River corridor. Nearby Curecanti National Recreation Area offers a different perspective of the Gunnison River for visitors to enjoy.
Plan your visit in advance to make the most of your experience at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

"Beautiful and unique sight to behold, it’s hard to see the depth that these canyons are, it was an easy walk from the visitor center to a great overlook. There is some informational content in the visitor center. There is no water up here. Outhouse was clean and heated"
"You know what you’re going to see! It’s Black Canyon! Absolutely gorgeous place in summer or winter. If you go in winter, you’ll have to bring your own snowshoes. I was told you can rent them in town. I ended up hiking a few miles just in my snow boots but it was not the funnest of hikes. So yes, please bring some snow shoes. They use to offer them here if you came years ago but they no longer do. If you go in summer, get there early and make sure you check the site for any news. It’s an absolutely gorgeous place to visit and I can’t recommend this place enough! Enjoy."
"Always check the website and ranger station before venturing out. Great to see even in the winter. Traction gear is recommended as it is slightly icy. Only south rim is open but gorgeous regardless. The visitor center closes at 4. Bathrooms available but vault toilets. No water."
"Way more than what we thought it was going to be! Worth a trip to see the really cool landscapes. We didn’t have time to stop and hike but so glad we stopped and drove through to see the major outlooks. A lot of the trails we went to were dog friendly as well which was a nice surprise."
"This is a beautiful area to see. Most of the lookouts are an easy walk from the parking areas along the road. You still need to be a little careful because of loose rocks and dirt, but it's pretty easy to traverse. A couple areas have stairs so just be aware of that if you have any knee issues."
