"Everybody always talks about how expensive Hawaii is. My family went shopping for breakfast and lunch items for 25 people we spent $125. Sure, there were items that our kids wanted, like a pound of bacon for $15. So you just shop for other items like a normal person. I didn't come to Hawaii to eat everything we can have on the main land. The fruits are tropical and amazingly sweet. SPRING: avocados, chocolate sapote, citrus, lychee, mangosteen, star apple. SUMMER: avocados, dragon fruit, egg fruit, jackfruit, lychee, mango, passionfruit, soursop. YEAR-ROUND: apple bananas, breadfruit, coconuts, noni, papaya, pineapple. There's no reason to feel intimidated by the exotic fruits of Hawaii. They are unique looking and amazing tasting. Lychee fruit is a small round fruit with red scaly skin, sweet juicy pulp, and one large seed. You eat the white juicy pulp. Chocolate sapote is a fruit that looks like a tomato with an inedible skin that turns from olive to a deep yellow-green when ripe and a pulp which is white and inedible when unripe but assumes a flavor, color and texture often likened to chocolate pudding when ripe. Mangosteen is purple fruit that you cut the skin off and just scoop out the white flesh with a spoon. The taste is a mix of a lychee, a strawberry, and a peach. A star apple is a deep purple fruit named for the star-shaped pattern formed by its seeds. The fruits are very sweet, with a pulpy, jelly-like texture and a taste like applesauce with hints of tropical fruits and grapes. Dragon fruit is a cactus that has a mild sweet flavor of a pear and kiwi and a soft texture similar to a ripe kiwi. Under-ripe dragon fruit, on the other hand, is basically flavorless. The egg fruit has a deep yellow flesh that is dense, smooth, and slightly dry, similar to a cooked egg yolk. It has a flavor that's often compared to pumpkin pie or a roasted sweet potato. Ripe yellow jackfruit has a subtle sweet flavor with a combination of a banana, apple, and a mango. Young green jackfruit, on the other hand, has a neutral flavor and texture similar to shredded meat, making it popular for a meat substitute. Soursop is a large green fruit that weighs 6 to 7 pounds. The white flesh tastes like a citrus, pineapple, strawberry, and a touch of creamy coconut. It also has indigestable seeds like a watermelon. Apple bananas are not a typo. This variety of yellow fruits got it's name because of their apple, like flavors of a sweet and tangy banana. Breadfruit's name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread and having a potato-like flavor. Why would you not eat what the island provides instead of what they have to ship in from the main land? Just seems like the typical american train of thought. Here is a picture of a soursop. The green spikey skin and creamy citrus, pineapple, and strawberry tasting inside."
"Very small aisles, usually have people stocking shelves that act like you’re in their way. Very rude employees never see any of them with a smile or willing to help. I just figure it is not a good place to work. I understand you have to stock, but with it being so small, do it at night. Don’t see too many buying a weeks worth of groceries. Lots of one or two items in carry baskets. Try pushing a wagon around, it is a joke. You’ll stand waiting on people to pass than shopping. Personal I don’t like spending a hour to shop. No butcher on site, that I have seen. Usually don’t have the meat that is on sale that week. Always sold out. Very small selection of meat that is in stock. Produce is very limited. Prices are very high even for Kauai. All produce is sold by the pound. A bunch of celery cost $6.25, $3.19 per pound. Buy it at Walmart for$1.96 a bunch. Come on now, I know Times isn’t a Walmart. They aren’t a little mom and pops owned business either. That’s very out of line. This store is basically a large 7-11 store. There was no cashier on duty at 9 am. At the self check out only 3 of the 4 was working and everyone was having trouble. A line was have way down the store waiting. At 10 am one cashier opened. I have never seen more than 1 cashier however there is 3 lanes. I was taught you don’t make people wait that want to spend money! With the higher prices they can hire more cashiers. The self checkout is nice for one or two items but I needed a cashier and people do grocery shop before 10 am. I do shop here. However after today I am done. I have had enough of the employees attitudes, always out of sale item, and the high prices with no service. I will go to Walmart!"
"Awesome grocery store with everything you may need, plus the best poke bowls! $6.99 for small (perfectly enough for 1) or $10.99 for large with double the fish."
"Big save market here in koloa is the best convenience shopping grocery store that is so easy to find and it is surround near to most tourist spot here in koloa, the old koloa town is close to it and the new shopping village that they just built. its just a walking distance too, from koloa post office. and it is close to a bank and also to a hardware."
"I have been coming to this store my whole life, and that is not changing anytime soon. The workers are so friendly and always ready to help. The store itself is easy to navigate, but that might because I've been shopping here for 22 years. There is a bakery, a sandwich place, plate lunch place, and place to get poke. All of those choices are super yummy! They even have sushi here. In any case, if you need to do some shopping or if you need lunch, this is the place for you"
