Reviews of LX Jiu-Jitsu & Self Defense
"This is the best Jiu Jitsu academy in the Houston area. If you haven't trained with professor Leo please do so. His invisible jiu jitsu and how he teaches it is world class. He is a Rickson Gracie student and a Gracie Jiu Jitsu graduate from Rio in Brazil. He's competed at the highest level, he's learned from the source. His black belts are top notch and his instructors Jason, Chris and Blake are great teachers as well. Lots of attention to detail, feedback and a great culture and atmosphere. Do not hesitate to give this school a try. You will not regret it."
"Great way to practice BJJ. The community is amazing, as well as the Professors and Instructors. I go there every Tuesday and Thursday and leave, happy that I learned something new."
"I guess all I can offer is that not every school is for suited for every type of personality. Personally I have trained here 5-6 days/wk for the last 2 yrs. and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The school is very nice, well maintained, and the instruction is absolutely top notch. That being said it is a very traditional school that strictly adheres to the teachings and philosophy of Grand Master Helio Gracie. Being that Professor Xavier was fortunate enough to have such a close connection to the Gracie’s, I will say that he has uncompromisingly high standards but as someone who has studied martial arts for over 12 years this is precisely why I sought him out. Students wear the traditional white gi, bow upon entering/exiting the mats, and are strongly encouraged to adopt the "Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle" that promotes healthy eating, courage, discipline, and respect, as well as other virtues. The curriculum there is based solely on self defense as opposed to the popular "Sport" Jiu Jitsu (I’m not knocking Sport) and with the exception of a few select students, people that train there do not compete. You will not find the Prof. teaching the “flashy” or “trendy” moves such as the Berimbolo, Inverted Guard, or anything like that. His maneuvers are straight forward, tried and true techniques that have a very specific purpose… to serve as a practical way to defend yourself regardless of size and strength, be it yours or your opponent’s. As a result of the structure and methodology of teaching, Prof. Leo has several representatives of local law enforcement agencies that train there such as Sugar Land PD, Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, and Missouri City PD. The other folks run the gambit of professions; doctors, engineers, college students, etc. There are multiple kids' programs as well, which is arguably where the school shines the brightest. As a matter of fact, many of the adult class participants joined the school after seeing the benefits and positive effects that Gracie Jiu Jitsu had on their children. The summation of this lengthy review (sorry but I wanted to tell the full story) is that it is the only school in the Houston area and perhaps in the state that has had the honor of having Grand Master Helio's own sons, (Royler, Royce, and Rickson) visit the academy on multiple occasions. Additionally, whenever Prof. Leo visits Brazil he always returns to the original Academia Gracie (Gracie Humaita) where he learned the art, received his certification directly from the Gracie’s themselves, was one of the VERY few non-Gracie’s to have the honor of being an instructor there, and studied alongside other legendary representatives of the art such as the Ribiero's, Valente’s, Vini Aieta, and many more. All of this is completely separate from the accolades that he earned in competition; World’s, Pan-Am’s, Brazilian Nationals, etc."
"Great training here for bjj. Everyone is so helpful and accommodating. It's a good group of people for young kids and adults alike."
