Reviews
"Lyric Stage should start being honest with its potential audience members and change its name to Dallas Black Musical Theater Company. In recent years, its lead and major supporting roles have been cast with black and brown actors/actresses. They restage musicals from the past without the traditional casting used in the past. As an example, in August, 2023, they will stage the traditional Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “Cinderella”, with a black female playing Cinderella. If you want to see the next young, up-and-coming Kristin Chenoweth, Kelli O’Hara, or Carrie St. Louis on stage, skip this theater company. Also, their audience size in recent years is drastically smaller than in the past. Their season ticket holder audience base is largely gone. Institutional sponsors of this theater company should stop funding it and wasting their money."
"Terrific production of Aida. So much talent. Excellent job by all."
"We went to see Quanah. I enjoyed the play and music. Not the absolute pinnacle of musical theatre, but still entertaining and a great story. But, I don't think this is the place to rate the show. The theatre itself was a good size. We found a parking place easily (free) and it was a short walk to the door. The crowd was thick, as to be expected, but the lobby is large and interesting. There were exhibits up in various places, snacks and drinks, posters, memorabilia, and photos of the cast. The 'Will Call' window was the only way to get our tickets, as there was no option to print them from the internet. The line seemed long, but after I stood in it a couple minutes, I realized that the line was actually to the restroom. It might have been a good idea to put the Will Call line in a different window, or otherwise mark it in some way. Restrooms were convenient in two places. There were a lot of senior citizens at this event. Going into the theatre, we had to walk up about twenty stairs, and then walk down the aisle to our seats on the second row, also about twenty stairs down. There were handrails, but it was still challenging. I saw another lady and a man struggling to get down them, too. When you depend on a walker or cane, or your legs/knees aren't quite the same as they used to be, you hope not to have to deal with so many stairs. Maybe there was an elevator? But, we didn't see any signs for one. At our seats, my husband (6'4") folded himself into his seat. This is typical, because everywhere we go, there is never enough leg room, but I mention it because he would rather sit home in his recliner than to dress up and go sit in a tiny seat to watch live theatre. This facility would do well to add an elevator or two, and some signs on how to get to it. Theatres in general are going to have to be more senior-friendly if they want the business of us older, retired folks, who have the extra money to spend on tickets."
"Full orchestras, brilliant singing, world premieres and the classics of American musical theater. Lyric is a stand out!"
"I love this theater. Not too big, but still grand. Easy to get around and not really a bad seat in the house. But the best thing about this venue is the programming. You really haven't heard great musical theater until you've heard it with a live orchestra, and the orchestra here is stellar. Made up of pros from the Fort Worth and Dallas Symphonies, you'd be hard pressed to find this quality anywhere else."
