The theater's design was adapted from a plan in Frank Lloyd Wright's files, originally intended for a West Coast theater in 1915. Construction began in 1955 and was completed in 1959, with the theater opening its doors with a performance of Thomas Wolfe's "Of Time and the River."
Named in honor of actress Kalita Humphreys, who tragically passed away in 1954, the theater stands as a tribute to her memory. With its unique design and historical significance, the Kalita Humphreys Theater continues to captivate audiences and preserve the legacy of its visionary architect.
Reviews
"This is the only theater designed by the Frank Llyod Wright in the heart of Dallas. This is situated in a very pedestrian friendly area. The parking space is adequate. The building was built around 1959 so please don't expect anything fancy. Enjoy the architecture of the time and also the performance that take place within."
"We saw The Rocky Horror Show! It was so much fun. It was well cast. It is hard to compete with Tim Curry. However, this Frank N Furter made the part his own. The narrator was very good. He was able to keep some potentially rowdy audience members in check with humor. Definitely a must-see this Halloween season."
"We saw a Sunday matinee of The Rocky Horror Show and absolutely loved it! A well played quality production in an intimate theater. While we had front and center I don't believe there would have been a bad seat in the house to enjoy the play from. We hope to return next year for the production of Dial M for Murder."
"Easy to get to. Easy to get in and out of the parking lot. It's really the perfect sized venue for myself. It's a small theater from what I could tell. But it's great for bringing the audience into the show. We saw Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was amazing. Highly recommend the show and the venue. I will look for more shows from this theater."
"Frank Lloyd Wright designed building is fascinating inside and out ( and certified). Spacious lobby accommodates comfy seating and a bar with limited selection of wine, beer and sodas with snacks. Theatre seats are narrow but with plush seats. Bathrooms downstairs may be challenging as no handi-capable access evident."
