"It is very unfortunate because I enjoy Joe Balognas' establishment's food, as well as Cinco De Mayo. however the property owners, Kaufmann properties clearly have no idea what they are doing in terms of the parking situation. They share a parking lot with Cinco De Mayo and another establishment there. We came to this establishment to eat at Cinco Di Mayo with our friends from out of town, who accidentally went to locos tacos across the street. We passed the parking lot attendant, who apparently had been hired since the machine was broken. As him and the tow truck driver actively parked there, were chatting together, we passed them in our Cinco di mayo Halloween costumes, zorro and day of the dead. We passed them as they said nothing. We crossed the street to get our friends at local tacos, and literally two minutes later we came back to our car to get money and go inside to eat, when our car was gone. Do not go to eat here because you will not have your car when you leave, and will be out 137 dollars for a tow fee. The signs are posted that you can park there for both restaurants but clearly thats not the case, and even if it were, the machine is broken and the attendant gets some kind of kickback for getting cars towed. money trap. We will not be eating here not Cinco de Mayos in the future, on principle. It is unfortunate because we had a party of 10, and the waiters and waitresses would have made a significant tip, but do to this rental agency's apparent greed, and desire to make money off of a parking/tow trap instead of eating, we had to pay a tow fee. When we called the tow place, they said i needed a permit in the window. Posting pics here of all the other cars w/o permits. Machine was down. Mismanaged horribly."
"I'm currently on my third lease with Kaufmann Properties. I haven't always had a great experience, but since the new property manager took over, everything has been amazing. It's a complete 180 from the old management! Any issues are resolved quickly and she's always happy to help. Maintenance usually comes out the same day and they let me know if there's going to be a delay."
"I was evicted from this apartment because of this review******* Since my first publication, management has been more friendly and they replaced my toilet which is much obliged. I'm changing my review from hating it to its okay and will further more assess the situation. I am a current tenant with Kaufmann Properties. I will not be renewing my lease when it comes time. My first year was great, however some new management has taken over and it just seems more often then not, I have an issue with them. From no explanation as to why my water bill doubled in a month or how it is divided among the building, to making me take down personal decorations such as a tapestry, basic amenities not working such as my oven, and rude conversations with the front desk, have all pushed me out the building of which I once loved so much. When I call to discuss issues I am belittled and left in the dark. I do not appreciate it and will take my business elsewhere as I recommend to anyone considering one of their properties. CHEERS Stephanie Schlosser Yes I see your response, and IT IS ILLEGAL TO EVICT SOMEONE FOR WRITING A BAD REVIEW ONLINE. So way to go you just convicted yourself. Good luck in life."
"I was hesitant to share my awful experience because of the backlash created by the property manager towards others. But I think it's important for other students and their parents to understand what you will get yourself into by renting from this business. FYI I lived neatly and paid my rent on time, so I didn't have too many issues. But their policies are ridiculous. 1. If you have a pet or want a pet, forget it. Even a declawed cat will mean a pet deposit equal to one month's rent, and considering their astronomical rents, that's a lot. 2. You only have 2.5 days to pay your rent for the month. Otherwise, you incur HUGE fees. So if your check isn't in the drop box by 3pm on the third, you will pay $40, then like $10 per day starting the next day. Expect an eviction warning. 3. They will try to fear monger their way into a lease renewal HALFWAY THROUGH YOUR LEASE. They will also do this with a rent increase. Every single year I lived there, they started harassing me 6 months into the lease to renew for next year, and told me rent had to go up (usually $25-50 depending on who knows what). They would tell me they will not hesitate to rent to someone else and have me leave as soon as my lease was up. I was in no position to risk that, so I renewed. Until I got sick of it and refused to renew early--guess what? The first time I did that, they got scared and said they would keep my rent the same. Every year after that, they still raised the rent, but not as much, and they were NEVER able to rent my apartment out before I felt comfortable renewing. Also please note that they begin showing your apartment at 6 months into your lease. Yes, they bring strangers into your home week after week, trying to rent out your apartment because you didn't sign a lease 6 months early. Week after week, I had fear mongering in my home, strangers looking through my stuff and in my closets, with threats that I might be homeless if I don't sign this paper now. So if you hold out and refuse to sign like I started to do, just be ready to have strange people viewing your apartment multiple times and not at any convenience to you as to when might work for your schedule--one time they came while I had family in town visiting. 4. The maintenance man will enter your apartment whenever he wants without notice. It got so bad one summer that NO EXAGGERATION I got anxiety when I would hear a door knock. Many times he would knock and then walk right in to do whatever he wanted (that particular summer, they were painting outside, so he frequently entered without any email notification prior so that he could remove the AC unit or access the window). A lot of the times that he did that, I was in bed, or showering. So for about a year, whenever I would hear a knock, I would enter a panic mode because I thought whoever it was was about to just walk in. That is not okay and if I had the means, I would have sued. 5. They do not care about you or your stuff. I had issues with neighbors using my washer and dryer in the common space. I put a lock on the plug. The neighbors CUT that lock and proceeded to use my equipment (at cost to me--water, gas, electric, not to mention use of the equipment). They spoke with the parents of the students, who of course did not admit to it, so it was dropped and nothing was done. They still used my stuff. When I left, the apartment was spotless (I took pictures). They charged me $100 cleaning fee, knowing I wouldn't have the means to fight it (and I think it was because I left one piece of equipment in the common space that I told a neighbor they could have and that's the only reason I left it). But that was interesting because they left standing water in the basement for WEEKS after a flood, destroying everything I had in storage, but it costs $100 to remove a piece of equipment that they probably didn't even remove, because the neighbor took it? Ok. Take pics of EVERYTHING if you rent here. Document every unannounced entrance by maintenance. This place needs to go out of business, or someone needs to organize a class-action suit."
"One star is actually not appropriate for the experience I had. I have never rented with this company (thank GOD), but I viewed a property on State Street owned by this company, and the property manager was unbelievably rude to me, my friend, and my family throughout the whole process of inquiring about this property. My friend's family owns funeral homes that are over 200 years old, and when she asked the property manager about some of the damages in the house, and she talked down to her and claimed it was just because it was an old house and was not fixable (it definitely was). I told her that I'm in a sorority and she told me she didn't like to rent to people in greek life because they always "ruin the property," which is blatant stereotyping and very disrespectful. She rushed us out of the house after about 20 minutes and claimed she didn't have time for us to stand around and think of questions to ask because she had other places to go. After I obtained a copy of the sample lease, I went through and highlighted everything I had questions about because she required not only a first month's rent for the security deposit, but ANOTHER deposit for my two declawed cats that was also equal to a month's rent, which is RIDICULOUS. I emailed her my questions and she didn't answer me, so my father called her the next day and she told him that we were not the right tenants for the property because we asked "too many questions" and that she didn't answer my email because I was "wasting too much of her time." According to the lease, if any appliances included in the lease broke down while the tenant was occupying the property, it would be the responsibility of the tenant to fix it on their own dime, even if it wasn't their fault it broke down. That's ridiculous. If you're going to provide it, you need to maintain it. The lease also states that if any sort of severe weather or natural disaster damaged the property, it would be the financial responsibility of the tenant to fix it, which is ALSO ridiculous. All the reviews here are very representative of the way this woman operates. She is extremely rude to any prospective tenants. The property I looked at on State street has been available for a very long time, and now I know why. I wish I could get in contact with the owner so I could take my complaints directly to them. The property we looked at wasn't even a bad property, and I would have been more than happy to rent there if she were not the property manager and if the lease terms weren't so unreasonable. She is supposed to be SELLING the properties, not driving people away, and that's exactly what she's doing. It's unfortunate that whoever's business this is is suffering at her hands. If you plan on working with this property at all, or even inquiring about it, I suggest you read all of these reviews (except for the two five star reviews, which are almost definitely written by her) AND read her completely unprofessional and vindictive responses to these reviews. I cannot wait to see what she has to say about my review, especially since I have the email to prove that I was nothing but respectful to her throughout the entirety of the time we were looking at this house on State Street and never ended up renting with her."
